RAID question

hi every one
so far i understand raid is use to combine 2 HD's and make them into one with doubled the speed but can u use it as a regular HD in windows E.G. if i connect 2 Same HD's on a RAID port will it show up in my computer as i.e. 80 gb (40+40)?

Thats considered RAID0 (if you really consider that RAID). A true RAID setup has redundancy, which you really would't need unless you're running a server or if you just have important data.
 
And it isn't "double the speed" either. In fact, in most cases there's no speed improvement as well, although you do cut your MTBF (mean time between failures) in half...meaning the chance of failure is far greater, resulting in total loss of data.
 
Raid 1 with 2x40g hard drives will effectively mirror image what is on one drive onto the other so that if one HD fails then the other has all you need to carry on. Effectively you will have 40g total to use.

Raid 0 means you would have 2x40g equalling 80g as the data written is split between the two drives, but if one hard drive falls down then the other is completely useless. So no Operating System.

Yes if you put two similar 40GB hard drives in a RAID 0 array, then it will show up as a single 80GB hard drive in Windows.
