Question about speed

Im going to be throwing my first system together.

nothing major, i dont game really. just something quick for internet and general use.


Was just wondering how you figure out what memory will work the best speed wise.


This is the motherboard im looking at

hopefully those 2 will work together. Not sure, im not going ot be making any moves on building this system untill this summer more then likely.


but yea, so how do i figure up the speed of memory i need?

PC2-6400 memory being DDR2 800 is the standard for the board there with the rather "quick look" before "newegg apoligizes for the inconvience". I'm currently running the 6000+ model here with 2gb of Kingston Hyper X DDR2 800 memory without problems.

Once you decide on which brand you will need to manually set the dram timings section usually found when going into the cpu configuration area of the bios likely Award since the Asus M2N-E model here uses the same nForce 570 chipset.

If you building this in the summer buying a AM2 board is a waste of money get a AM2+ for better future support. Plus as far as I understand within the next few months the X2 6000 and X2 6400 is being discontinued. The X2 5400 65nm. is aleady out and there coming out with a 5600 65nm. Brisbane to replace the 90nm. but the 6000 and 6400 are being dropped. Later this year the Windsor and Brisbane are all being discontinued to make way for the new AM2+ Phenom X2 and X3. Pretty sure Dell is releasing some Phenom X3 desktops in the next week

well i dont know a thing really about computers.
so lots more questions will come when its time.
if i have to much of a problem, there is a computer
shop here in town that i've been making friends at and
hanging out at, they have offered to help me out if i need
help when the time has come.

Advanced Micro Devices is releasing a Phenom X 2 processor? Sounds sweet! Thanks for the information.
 
One thing to look at is the nm (nanometer) number on processor specifications. If you're not familiar with what a nanometer is here is the layman's definition:

A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. You cannot see something a nanometer in size unless you use very powerful microscopes like atomic force microscopes.

The lower the nanometer number, the more refined the technology is.

Its going to be the Phenom X2 Kuma and Phenom X3 Toliman. There still going to make one called Athlon but it going to be a low end dual core with the Kuma core but no L3 cache.

I have been reading about the Phenom. The Phenom X 2 processor sounds like a processor that is low wattage and has 1 gigabyte level 2 cache but 2 gigabytes level 3 cache? This is more processing power at less wattage than the AMD Athlon 5600+ 65 nanometer processor?
 
Well they will be just like the Phenom X4. The Phenom X2 and X3 both will have 512kb of L2 for each core and 2mb of shared L3. The new X2 Athlon will have the same core but no L3. When the 45nm. are released late this year (right ????) there suppost to have from 4 to 6mb of shared L3
