here's the build I'm working on:

-Processor-Core 2 Quad Q6600
-Motherboard-Abit IP35 Pro
-Memory-Mushkin Enhanced 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2-800 -OR-
-CORSAIR XMS2 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 SDRAM
-Graphics Card-GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
-Hard Drive-Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB 32MB Cache
-Optical Drive-Samsung SH-S203B
-Power supply-Antec NeoHE 550W
-Enclosure-Antec P182

I know some people here have recommended against getting that mobo, but I've done more research and I'm still pretty sure I want it.
I've pretty much settled on everything but the RAM, HD, and DVD/CD but I'm still open to comments/suggestions. What do you think?

Edit: Oh, I'm also thinking of getting 2 HDs. Should I get 2 of the same or 2 different?

It looks really nice. Maybe consider a Corsair HX520 rather than a NeoHE? Either way, they're both great PSUs. Also you won't be disappointed with the case, I have it's predecessor, the P180b, and it's amazing. Also, have some cable ties handy, you'll need a lot to do the cable routing ;).

depends on the hard drive, if you want raid zero go with the 2 identical drives, if you want 2 different then don't look at me :P

there is nothing wrong with that mobo!!! dont let anyone talk trash about it. Just so you know it is a Crossfire mobo not SLI. so you would need 2 ATI or such crossfire vid cards to run dule. but to run 1 vid card it will be fine.

if you want to keep that 8800gt i would look at this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127329

better cooling and and the fan isnt as loud. wich the other still run warm and the fan is out of control IMO. but then again if its insie you budget look to the 8800gts ( g92 ) for 50 dallors more after rebate and its just a better all aorund card for the price. wich has gone down more then 60-100 dallors in the past month with the new 9800 comming out in march

forgot to add.... that is a great HD!!! one of the best on the market right now. the thing is with 2 750 gig HD's your system will be so old and out dated by the time you can ever fill them. If i was going to get 2 of the same i would get the 500 gig 7200.11 or the 7200.10 250-300 gig HD for your OS and non removable apps and the 500 or 750 for gaming, vid editing, music ect ect.

Yes there is. No Abit is without a bug. There was a thread saying that the IP35 didn't work, and that he was going for the P35 next.

Get the P35-DS3L or regret it.

I always thought most people had like one slower drive for storing like word documents and pictures, then a faster one for games and video. I dont know for sure, ive never used 2.

I did decide to go with the 8800GT card recommended instead of my original. I had no idea there were so many variations on the 8800. What problems are people having with the Abit IP35 Pro? It seems like it has about as many problems as other boards.

I really don't understand the difference between SLI and Crossfire (yes I did look it up on google but I'm still confused) when you say duel do you mean duel monitors, duel processors or duel vid cards? Sorry for my noob ignorance.

This is what I DO know about what I want in a system though:
-I plan on one vid card now but maybe add another in the future.
-Same with monitors.
-I never plan on overclocking.
-I'll be using this system for 3d modeling and rendering and I tend to do a lot of multitasking running multiple programs at once (eg. adobe apps, modeling programs, rendering programs, etc.)
-I need a lot of data storage and plan on 2 HDs, one for the OS and programs and one for data (or maybe one for OS and one for programs and data?).
-An auto backup system would be ideal.
-I really want to keep everything neat and organized in the case so good layout design and space compatibility is important to me.

Based on this, what would be a good alternative to the Abit IP35? The Gigabyte P35 DS3L looks like a fine board, but I don't love it.

Thanks for all the advise so far!

BLAH BLAH BLAH " there WAS a thread " well find it! I know about 5 people running it and not a problem at all. not to turn this topic into a flame fest but back up your statement with facts.
I run windows vista ultimate 64bit i bet it is garbage becasue you had read something some place at one time or another. rubish!!!!!

Crossfire and SLI are when you run 2 vid cards at the same time for better and faster grafix. SLI is for the GeForce cards like the 8600,8700,8800, and 9600's For corssfire you would use other cads that are ATI cards ( sorry for the ignorance but i dont know to meny of them )
when you look at a video card you will see someplace on them either " crossfire " or " sli " the Abit is a crossfire board. you could run 2 8800gt on it BUT you can not run them in an SLI config. you would be running them at a seprate rate the first would run at full but the second would run at only half or so.

If you want to run dule cards and have one card for a second monitor, you could look at the Nividia 780i board where you can run 2 8800gt in an SLI config and have another 8800gt run by its self for a 2nd monitor. the down side is the cost of the 780i is about 100 more then the abit ip35 also you would need some major cooling and need a BIG PSU i would go over kill and get a 1k watt just for this.

-sidenote- If this confuses you im sorry i am really hungover!

Thanks for that explanation, it really helped.

What about these mobos instead: Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R / GA-EP35-DS3P. Is it worth it to get the DDR3 capability of the former? what what are the trade offs? Will they work with the 8800GT?

And what about an ATI Radeon HD 3870 card? Are any of the brands better than the others?

8800GT can work with any motherboard that support PCI-E

EDIT: If you want to save money you can get the new 9600GT 512MB which performs on par with HD3870

Personally, I would get Nvidia video card

DDR3 at the moment is not worth. Both board are fine for 8800GT
althernative to the above board is the slight cheaper GA-EP35-DS3R.

8800GT is better than HD3870. But HD3870 is cheaper, and if you choose the DS3P MB, you could run crossfire (although not in full speed)

P.S. I personally would get ATI/AMD card if they have similar performance/price... Don't want them to get brust.

8800GS is a great budget GFX. Really good for the price too.

The latencies of DDR3 are too high to be useful right now.

Fixed the links.

I need to lower my final cost so I went back again to compare the 2 boards. I may go with the P35-DS3L after all.

my Ram will be more $$$ because the P35-DS3L takes DDR 1066. I'll have to get 2 gigs instead of 4. how much will my performance suffer by getting 1 2gb instead of 2 1GB so that I can more easily upgrade to 2x2 later?
