Laptop temperatures

Anyone know a good free program that will tell me what temperature my laptop is running at?It seems to be getting too hot.

Its a HP ZE 4900 with Celeron 1.33

ITs showing my HD temp at 104 degrees.Does that seem high?

My processor is running 140 degrees

Yes, that's high for both, though the HDD can stand higher temps than a Desktop unit typically can. Is the CPU fan working? Is the heat-sink or went grill covered by dust? That could explain the high CPU temp.

Fan is working,allthough it use to come on a lot more than it use to.Seems like when I first got it ,it ran all the time.

I took it apart and cleaned it real good.Blew out a lot of the dust and stuff.
 
You might also want to try everest home edition (just google it) that tends to be a little more reliable in the temperature readings than speed fan is. I've had speed fan give me negative temperatures on some of my computers.
 
Not to thread jack but I did the same download and it says my laptop is running damn near 140 F. I know my fan isn't working. Would one of those USB cooling pads be a quick fix until I can bring this thing in to get the fan repaired. What should a laptop normally run?
 
Cooling pads for laptops are hit or miss, IMO. I often find you get better results from blowing away dust and keeping the unit elevated an inch or two from surfaces than most cooling pads give. Depending on the laptop and HSF/CPU-speed, mid-to-high 30's up to around mid-50's is normal. Though, I've seen as low as 27*C and as high as 62*C and the systems ran fine.

A better question would be 'why isn't my fan working?'.
 
i like rightmark cpu clock utility. you can have it start up minimized in the taskbar, and it shows you core temp and cpu clock speed.

also, clearinfo is a good program to monitor all around settings. it is embedded in your desktop so you can see all your info on the fly.

as far as temps go, 60c is getting hot, 70c is bad for the cpu, and 80c will kill your pc in a matter of days.

Something else you might wanna check is an obstructive item (such as a small piece of paper) in the PSU fan. Happened on a mates PC and he fried the PSU. Got too hot and overheated - green sparks and all! I use Everest Home too, has never given me a reading I have doubted.

Notebook Hardvare Control is realy great. It's free to. It support's clocking the cpu also. If your lap is getting hot, try cleaning the fan and the radiator with a can of compressed air. you will be supprised how much the temp drops.

I just downloaded Everest Ultimate, my CPU is at around 86 degrees celsius, with both of the cores at around 80. This is a 4 day old Toshiba M205 on the "Battery Optimized" setting. Apparently instead of running the fan at 50% all the time, it just "slows down the CPU" to cool off. According to what you said, my CPU will be dead in a few days?
