pirated copy

I have an old computer for my basement that I use occasionally. It has XP, before that 98 second ed, before that 98 First edition. The problem is that all operating systems are or have never been genuine windows. Now Microsoft is demanding $ 199 to send me a product key that will turn this old beast into a genuine XP. It looks like they can shut me down, so far it has been "correct now" or "later".
I have a feeling I can not avert the power of Microsoft for long. I have a new HP Vista, great machine but I do not want to part with $199 or my old computer.
Do you think they will give me the boot ?

Thats what you get for using a pirated copy, it sounds like it tried to activate online and it threw up a flag at Microsoft.. my guess.

Buy it, or download and use ubuntu, its free. Good for internet surfing.

if your willing i have copies of windows xp pro and vista ultimate both OEM copies. 25$ for xp and $80 for vista. payments done with paypal Neither are pirated. im a Tech for a local college and all techs get a copy of software that comes into facility to disclose how ever we want

Thats no no, They will just stop updates and bug the crap out of you with a popup saying its not a genuine copy of windows. You could buy a legit copy of XP cheaper that paying 199 for a key.

Pirated is a no no. which can lead to problems down the road with the government finding out where that OS is coming form. Liek i sad before i have copies of vista ultimate and XP Pro which both are OEMs way cheaper than M$

well yes, but you need to backup your data onto another partition or maybe an external drive

No, it won't wipe everything. During Setup, you'll be given the option to create a partition using free disk space and install Ubuntu there.

There are also many other distros of linux that you can use beside ubuntu although, I am on 7.10 Gusty right now and like it. A few examples would be openSUSE, Mandriva, Centos, MintOs, PcLinux, FreeBSD. There are many more distros to choose from. You should choose an OS that meets your needs and thats kinda hard to tell at times. Do you have any existing knowledge of linux?

if he doesnt, theres the book:

Linux for Dummies

Which is part of the dummies series. I started reading it at Borders and it taught alot, i just was hungry and left the book, but it seemed worth the read, it walks u through everything!

I have no experience with Linux but I know someone who I can talk to that uses it. We have no bookstores that carry anything but novels and magazines. The library had two books on computers but someone stole them. However I will pursue Linux on Google and forums , thanks for the help.

i have a few ideas for you. some of which might be hard to explain on here. add me on msn or aim. addresses are in my signature :)

Over time certain elements will cripple themselves. At least they used to, although MS did lighten their stance on pirated copies lately. You have to laugh at the government threat just to sell you a copy of Vista (btw, it's illegal for him to sell them and for you to use them.. but that's another story).

The government doesn't care about your crappy computer in the basement, and neither does MS. They DO care about the people distributing the pirated software, though.
