Second HDD Question

I installed a second HDD in my daughters computer and everything recognizes the second HDD except Windows, It shows up in the Bios, and under device manager but not in Control panel>Admin>Computer mgmnt>Disk mgmnt. I did not format this drive yet, I was hoping it would be recognized and I could simply right click and format but as usual a simple task becomes a PITA!
Here's what I plan to do, if there is an easier way or if this won't fix my problem, please let me know.
The computer is running XP home and I plan on putting in the XP disk and rebooting, selecting the HD in question and doing a quick format, stop the install and then remove the disk. I'm hoping when I reboot the computer will see the new drive and I can then do a full format...what do you think? Is there an easier way or should I put on some coffee:)

The drive will not appear unless it is partitioned and formatted. Are you sure it don't show up in disk management? Is this a SATA or IDE drive?
 
Its showing up in Device manager but not under the Disk management, doesnt make sence? When you click on disk Management it should show up on the (lower) right.

I've been looking around since I posted and it appears this happens quite often but with different fixes. I don't have the computer in front of me to check "the lower right" to see if it's there but I looked around pretty good and as far as I can tell it's everywhere but "my Computer" and "Disk Management", you are correct, it doesn't make sense but it is what it is, so here we are:)

I don't think the OS is seeing it because it hasn't been formatted, that's why the XP disk thing in post #1, I guess I want somebody to tell me if that's my issue or if I'm wasting my time on that "fix"

most likely you didn't set the jumpers correctly.

you added it to an existing ide cable that already has a hd, correct? if so then you should have changed the new hd's jumpers to slave.

unless the newly added hd would occupy the very end of the ide cable. in that case the jumpers on the new hd would be correct (maufacturers always put it as master) and the older hd would occupy the middle end, would need the jumpers set to slave.

once successful you'll see the drive in disk management allowing it to be formatted
