Suggestions on a video card

I have always made do with the onboard video. However, I now find myself wanting to branch out into other games. I don't know what games exactly, except that I have a copy of Sid Meier's Pirates that I have never been able to play because my video chip does not support it. I know that it may be hard to choose a video card without knowing what games I intend on playing -- but you guys are smart, maybe you could look into your crystal ball? :D

So I would like your input regarding what video card I should get. Price is an issue, but I would like to get a card that will last me for the life of my computer, if possible. Here is the system I have (it is self build):

Intel Motherboard D865GBF (Manual says it has an AGP Connector that supports .8V (4x and 1x) and
1.5V (8x) AGP Cards) -- the motherboard has an 800 MHz system bus--if that matters
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor
2Gbyte PC3200 RAM (combined for 800 MHz bus speed) (capable of 4GByte but not sure that will be necessary in the computer's usable lifespan)
XP Service Pack 2 (but may upgrade to Vista in the future)
350 Watt supply
100 GByte Hard Drive (78 GBytes free)
Basic CRT Monitor (will update to LCD if and when it dies)

I realize that I will likely need to upgrade the power supply when I add the video card. Do you have any suggestions?

The only other update I am likely to do in the life of the computer is to add a DVD writer. Otherwise, this is it for this computer.

Thanks for your input.

P.S. I will probably buy it at the local Best Buy (closest and allows returns if it doesn't work out). I believe they stock PNY, ATI - Radeon, VisionTek - Radeon, and XFX.

No 8600gt available in AGP?

Seems nobody has replied. I would suggest getting the xfx 8600gt xxx zalman if you want to save money.

Thanks for your response.

I checked the website. It appears that a similar card is not available in AGP (or at least not available at that website). I do not have PCIe. It would appear that a similarly priced AGP card using a NVIDIA chipset is one using the 7600GS chipset. What do you think?
