Transfer cable for old system to new

New Member
Old system was running Windows98SE, new system Vista Home Premium.
Was told to purchase Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista. Right on the package it says "transfer files from XP to Vista" but that's not what we were using.

Off to store, was told to purchase external floppy drive, back up all old files/pictures/programs etc to floppy on old computer then install floppy drive on new system, load floppy's and burn them to CD.

Sounds labor intensive not to mention $30 for a floppy drive I won't need once everything is moved over.

Is there a cable available for Win98SE to Vista? I'd have to order online or drive out of town most likely as only local places are Wal-Mart (floppy option), OfficeMax (cable option but none for Win98SE) or RadioShack(small store but maybe they'd have it).

I guess you could always buy an external hard drive enclosure, put your old HDD in there and transfer all to your new computer and then keep the old HDD as a backup. Or you could also not buy anything and simply connect your old HDD to your computer(from inside). However, if your mobo uses SATA, I guess you'd need an IDE SATA cable.

Just a guess which would make lots of sense to me.
 
If the old computer still works, and has a usb port, why not use a flash drive to copy the files accross? most should come with windows 98 drivers on a CD with them but check before purchase!
 
Old computer still works, just overdue for a new one. Is a flash drive the same as a jump drive?

I bought a jump drive for kids to use to transport homework back and forth since school computers do not have floppy drives....could not find any drivers to make it work with Win98SE so emailed project to relative and took jump drive over there to save it for school.

Have 2 USB ports on old computer and 6 on the new one. OfficeMax has a PC transfer program they said would work for $70 so I am going to look there. I can return the transfer cable that was $42 and the floppy drive that was $30 (both un-opened) and just get a program that will hopefully work. I'm just not sure what I need to look for besides compatability between the two systems.

In your position I'd use your kid's flash memory stick to transfer. What make is it? How big?
 
Bought a PCMover program at Office Max, took us awhile to hook up old system, load it, unhook old, start up new, reload and transfer everything but it was alot less labor intensive than trying to do it all on floppy discs or even the jump drives since we had 9 years worth of stuff on the old system.

Now at least we can take our time getting rid of stuff we don't use/need.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll be back when trying to figure out new system. Kids are better than we are but they don't always know the "right" way to do something, just how to get it done.
