I know its a game, so don't tell me that, lol. But what exactly is Gary's Mod, and what do you do? Is it worth buying, or not really?

To my under standing. Just say you own tf2 you can make like a tf2 rag doll thing, put all the things you made into effect, Like if you watch the trailer in steam the buble car. Hard to explain tho.

Its pretty much a game where you can create whatever you want, do with whatever you want, and generally have a good time. As if youll like it, first try out garrys mod 9, its free! (Just a little outdated in what it can do, but youll get the idea).

It isnt coming up on my steam list and there is no .exe file. Do I actually need HL2? Because I have HL2 deathmatch and HL2 lost island, but not HL2. Is that what the problem is? I restarted steam and it still didnt com up

Some may say that unless you have HL2 you can't do it, however I was able to utilize HL2: DM when I only had CSS, DoD Source and HL2: DM. Make a shortcut for HL2: DM, right click on the icon and select Properties. In the "Target" box it should say something like this "X:\Wherever you have Steam installed\Steam.exe -applaunch 320" without the " 's. Here you should add "-game gmod9 -console" again without the " 's. The gmod9 folder containing the Garry's Mod files should be put in "X:\Wherever you have Steam installed\Steam\SteamApps\Your username\". If this doesn't work, then try to move the gmod9 folder into the SteamApps folder directly.

You are installing it in the steamapps\sourcemods folder right? Then you just restart steam and it should be there. As far as I know you need at least some form of the full source engine SDK, and if you got hl2dm from one of those "you have our graphics card, here is the game free" things, then you dont have it Im afraid.

BTW, its lost coast ;).

I got Garry's Mod 9 to work when I only had CSS, DoDS, Lost Coast and HL2DM. Nowadays I have Orange box also but it did work before too.

I can't get it to work at all. It wont even show up in my steam games

It's not supposed to show up in the Steam games if you do what I told you to. Try putting the gmod9 folder in the SteamApps/SourceMods folder. And then use the shortcut you made which has the "-game gmod9 -console" added in the Target box in the shortcut's Properties.

Earlier you called it lost island, but its lost coast ;).

CSS, DODS and purchased copies of HL2DM ALL come with a copy of the source SDK bit.

However, if you got any source engine for free (aka, portal first slice, lost coast, hl2dm-graphics card, dods free weekends, half life 2 trial, etc) then it will not work because free versions dont come with the SDK.

Ok, didn't know that.

I didnt get it for free. I have the engines

As in purchased? If you have the engines illegally then it probably wont work there either. Im afraid that I havnt much else to suggest to fix it then perhaps to try and re-download, maybe yours is corrupt.

For me it was as simple as downloading, putting it in steam\source mods folder, restarting steam, bam, there it is!
