XP or Vista

There are probably already threads about this but I couldn't find any on a quick search through. I'm just wondering if I should get XP or Vista Business (I can get either for $25 through my University :D)

Going to be for gaming primarily btw...

what version of XP is it? if it is pro i would stick to that for now, unless you wanna play halo 2 lol.

or maybe buy both and dual boot?

Hmm I'd have to get back to you on the XP version. I think I saw a big list of stuff to choose from though. As for dual-booting, I've never done it, does it slow down your computer or have any kind of effects like that??

Edit: Ok, I can get Windows XP Professional for $25 <or>
Windows XP Professional with SP2, ISO Image for free

So maybe vista with the free XP and dual-boot???? Given it has no side effects.

Honestly, I used to be a Vista-hater and all for XP, but now that I've used Vista for over a year, when I switch back to XP I see what it's missing. Vista is much better out of the box, with far more drivers pre-loaded.

I can't stand Vista... It's been giving me so many problems. I mean, I can even load my XP virtual machine and "resolve" any issues I'm having. It's pathetic...

Just yesterday, I was trying to load files on my SD card using my laptop. After "successfully" transferring the files, I safely ejected the device then tried it on my GPS, but the files were corrupt. I pulled the same files (off my NAS) using my Macintosh, and it worked fine...

Vista...many people may disagree with me but i havnt had one problem with it.

It runs alot smoother than xp,looks better etc.

also it has dx10 :)

Personally, I love Vista.
And, it's going to get a whole lot better when SP1 finally arrives sometime this month.

Vista is "pretty", but's WAY too bloated for it's own good. Tremendous amounts of crap, both software and Wizards that typically overcomplicate things. Plus all the problems I've been having only while running Vista, and over-all slow performance when compared to XP

If its a new computer, you might as well go ahead and get vista. I love it, personally i think it runs faster than XP...

There are videos on YouTube of Chris Pirillo talking about how good Vista is, but then he gets a BSOD on his PC running Vista (clickl here).

I'm running XP Home Edition w/SP2, and I've never had any major problems with it.

I Love Vista

HI All,
New member here.

I have used XP Pro at home since before SP-1 on 2 laptops and 4 home made desktop computers. The desk top machines were complex and all ran great. Still use XP at work. I love XP.

I like Vista better. My home made Vista machine is still complex. I did have some trouble with older drivers and a couple of programs which did not run at all. Fortunately, they were not needed like Nero ROM Burning, for example, because Vista (unlike XP) has full featured media capability. In general, Vista found drivers without much effort from me. RAID 1 installed without a glitch on SATA 500 gig drives. I have one essential program, Maptech Terrain Navigator, which I have to run in XP compatability mode. But it does run and is functional.

In truth, this Vista installation on a new mother board and with new hard drives has been the most difficult, by far, of any of the machines I have built. I won't lie to you. However, the results of the effort is worth the trouble, IMO. Remember, Vista SP-1 is on the way and should fix problems that some are having. Personally, I'm not having any.

I find Vista faster than XP. I don't understand why some folks are saying that Vista is slower and that they are having lots of problems. I have to think it's because they are using outdated software and have not configured the hardware properly. Not that that's not important but, really, software does age and eventually has to be replaced. And it's not too much to ask that the hardware be set up properly.

I think having sufficient memory is important. I have 4 gigs. Also, I had problems with my original video board and had to replace it. I run dual monitors each with separate Look Up Tables for ICC color profiles which requires a specialized video card. My Vista machine is tailored for Photoshop which runs, starts and computes very quickly.

Not to be underestimated, I think Vista Aero is pretty and feels sophisticated. I know that's like saying a monkey wrench is pretty. But that's how I feel. At work, XP feels and looks like 1930's car by comparison.

Also, in a complex server based computing environment or on a LAN, Vista outruns XP by a bunch. This holds both for network set up and network security. Vista is much better. Sometimes Vista gets a little heavy handed with its warnings but if you are really bothered by this they can be disabled. Not a biggie. Once I had the machine set up, software installed, drivers downloaded and installed, the Vista UAC warnings reduced by an order of magnitude. I have re-enabled UAC.

All in all, I love Vista. Of couse I'm typing this on my Vista machine and smiling. :)

I believe you're right. According to Chris P., Vista itself is great, but the issue that people have is compatibility. Some users who upgrade to Vista just expect their current hardware and software to run on Vista. That's just not always the case.

When I bought my PC in December 2006, it came "Vista Ready", but had XP Home Edition w/SP2. It runs great...I currently have no reason to upgrade.

HI Datalyss,
Thanks for the welcome. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Being a very happy XP user I would not have switched to Vista except my Asus mother board failed which set off a whole chain of events that led me to where I am now. The plastic latching system used to hold the CPU heat sink down broke for no good reason. A local computer builder told me that this is a common problem with this particular Intel socket design. It sure stopped my computer in its tracks. There was no fixing it.

So, I was faced with building a whole new computer. I was pissed at first but then saw it as an opportunity to do a major upgrade and use RAID1 on new larger drives. My old 3.2gH Pentium 4 machine was about 4 years old so I did not feel too bad. At first I tried to install my old XP Pro but I ran into a problem during installation that stopped me. It must have had something to do with the new Intel mother board and XP.

So, I bit the bullet and ordered Vista Ultimate and the adventure was on. I used as much old hardware and software as I could but still had a new power supply, new Intel motherboard, new Intel Duo Core processor, 2 new 500gB SATA drives, new memory, a new video card, and a new OS. I found that the new mother boards are really new. Fewer PCI slots, very USB oriented, PCI Express, serial ATA drives, and serial and parallel ports are now considered legacy features. I was in a whole new world. That's a lot change in just 4 years.

Well, there was a lot of learning to do but I got it done. If I were better or more current at building computers it would have made a big difference. I spent a lot of time on the WEB and in the process discovered this site. I don't think I'll quit my day job! :)

It was worth it. To complete the show I just received two new 24" Eizo LCD monitors. Wow! Lots of display space. Nice monitors. I'm poorer but happy.

i am personally an XP fan. I have 2 computers, one with XP (my one) and one with Vista (the family one). I find that my computer with XP, hich has worse specs than the Vista computer runs faster, even with more software installed.

If it's looks that's making you make the switch to Vista, there's plenty of programs such as Windows Blinds & StyleXP that can fix that for you ;)

i would recommend XP for the moment, but I am looking for ward to see if theres major improvements to Vista in SP1.....

Also, Microsoft have released information that Vista isn't going to have a long stay, as they're already planning Windows 7 to be released within the next few years, a lot shorter than how long XP lasted as Microsoft's prime OS, so it can't be all that successful.....

I'm in the same situation. I'm gonna upgrade comp soon and don't know if I should stick with Vista (Home Premium 32-bit), or install XP (Pro 32-bit)
Leaning towards sticking with Vista though...

As for the performance as ThatGuy16 said, I also think Vista loads faster than XP for some reason. And I didn't notice a difference in performance on COD4, so that's a + to Vista.

HI,
I hope you don't think that what was to become Vista was not already in the works when XP arrived. It was. The life of operating systems is not long in today’s world and the development time is long and difficult. XP was reviled before SP-1 in spite of extensive beta testing. Many folks stuck with '98 or 2000. Now these same folks are XP lovers and for good reason. XP is has become excellent but only after SP-1 and SP-2.

I'm not trying to be a Vista apologist. I just think that folks are not being realistic. I really don't blame them because they need their computers to be reliable and cost effective. Have a little patience my friends. I do think the driver situation needs to improve and the service pack is needed. But all this will happen and convert the naysayers.

Given my use, I have no problems. But, as you know, there are many nooks and crannies in any operating system that any one user may never see but others will. Problems may lie there. Time is the only cure.
