i have 512mb of ram in my dell dimension and it says its ddr2 533mhz im looking to get 2gb would i have to get ddr2 ram aswell or could i get ddr2 ram at 800mhz?

First, why would you want to get DDR3 when it costs so much more?

But to answer your question, no you can't as they have different pin configurations and aren't interchangeable. What you may be able to do though is upgrade to 2GB of DDR2 667.

EDIT: I see you changed it from DDR3 to DDR2, chances are you could run DDR2 800 but it won't run at those speeds.

It would probably be better to get Ram as close as possible if your running them together. But more than likley the DDR2 800 will just backclock to DDR2 533 speeds if you run them together.

He must have edited his post, because he asked about DDR3, lol.

ive just found out my ram is DDR 400mhz would it be possible to put 533mhz ram into it, as ive noticed the 400mhz ram is more expenisve

Not if your talking about DDR 400 vs, DDR2 533. If you have DDR, DDR2 is not going to fit, the slots are keyed different.
