Want to Become a Reviewer

I've had some free time on my hands recently and have decided that I want to get into reviewing software. But I have a problem. I have no idea how to get started. Can anyone help me get started?

Oh and one question. I've heard that reviewers can request free review copies of software from companies that give them like 30 days or so to try out the software and review that. Is that true?

If you mean that you don't know how to get in the business of software reviewing...I think you should be working for a computer magazine or something. I don't think developers just give away programs if you tell them that "I review software"...if you're known in the business/profession the program is used for, or work for e.g. computer magazine as I just said, that's another thing...

I guess you could make up your own website full of YOUR software reviews. If it's good, it becomes reputable, and there you go. The only thing you need to be able to do is proving that you're the owner/whatever of the site...and you'll be getting beta releases faster than ever. oh well maybe not...well it could work. in theory.

Are you considering sofware reviewing as a job or a potential source of free software?

Well, with all due respect, who are you to review software? Seriously, what credentials do you have and/or how many people actually listen steadfast to your opinion or read your blog? Not trying to be a jerk, but unless you have a super in-depth knowledge of the type of software you are reviewing, it really won't matter.

Maybe for companies like Cnet, etc., but random average people...

I'm considering reviewing mostly as a hobby, but a job as a reviewer would be nice, although I'm certainly not expecting one.

I also plan on posting the reviews on sites like Helium and my own.

BLOGS, BLOGS, BLOGS.

Get your self a blog start reviewing you will get more and more hits over time, and then eventually go work for Cnet or a magazine.

Because another Blog reviewer is just what the Internet needs...

That advice sounds nice, but listening to it and real-world application are nowhere close to the same.

I don't even read my sister's blog...

No-one reads their sisters' blogs:D

In topic, this is true. If you want to be known as a professional, you need to present your stuff like a professional. Most people think blogs as a way for bored everyday people with no intention to ever use their creativity and sense of design to pass time by postin up their diaries and amateur advice or just to socialize. Hardly a formidable way of making you appear a pro-reviewer; even if someone comes across your blog, they probably can't be stuffed having a look at it. Indeed, there are probably a thousand blog reviewers out there - good luck trying to stand out of the crowd.
