First build, help a noob :)

Hi everyone, noobie here.:)

I am trying to build a gaming computer on a budget, I am trying to keep the total cost below $550.00.(not much I know)

I already have the monitor,mouse and keyboard,sound system, and a friend has some ATX cases I can have so I think I can get the following and still stay in budget.

And do I need a aftermarket CPU fan or will the one that comes with the CPU work?(I don't plan on doing any overclocking)

If I do need a CPU fan are there any good ones in the $25-35 range?

Firstly, it would be better to have intel CPU than AMD right now. If you insist to go for AMD, your set-up is OK. Best to go for black edition with CPU fan.

However, E8200 with GA-P35-S3G/ GA-P31-S3G with perform better than your AMD set-up

PSU: I think the ver2.01 is better??

8600GT not worth.

$25 CPU fan: Arctic cooling freeze 7 pro/ COOLER MASTER Hyper TX2
 
Thank for the info.

I guess I will go with the Intel CPU instead of the AMD(it is not that much more anyway)

But I guess this brings up another question, is it worth it to get a Quad-Core over the Duo-Core?

The E8200 is $200.00 and the Q6600 is $250.00($200.00 at Microcenter but there is not one in my state.:()

I know that right now not much software is made for Quad-Cores, but that will probably change within a year.

Would you recommend a single core then? Did you read this anytime in the last 2 years?

For gaming I would go with the dual-core right now for sure. Quad-core is better for multitasking (read: heavy multitasking), as has been said quite a few times. I have the E8400 and it's a great chip.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler, especially if you aren't overclocking.

no the duo is better for gaming atm and quads are best for multi-tasking..i read this too :)

You wont see much of an advantage but it's more future proof at the moment .. i would have gotten it but they didn't have any in stock at my canadacomputers :(

Q6600 - Slight gaming, heavy multitasking/CPU consuming software

E8400 - Slight multitasking, hardcore gaming.

:cool:

PS - E8400 beats Q6600 on any dual core supported game.
