Alright guys I tried doing a few searchs and am not able to come up with the best answer so I figured I would post my own thread. How can I connect two computers to gether so i can share files between them. I am using my laptop as my hard drive since I was building a new desktop now i want to transfer some files from my laptop to my desktop. laptop is running xp desktop is running vista. can i just plug in an ethernet cable to both and do it? i know there is something called the belkin easy transfer cable but i really don't want to spend 40 dollars on that or more than that for a portbale hard drive please help.

Are you sure thats correct? I was able to transfer files to my desktop upstairs through the wireless connection with a desktop downstairs that was not wireless just had a wireless modem.

Yeah, that's rubbish, they can be wired, wireless, doesn't matter. Just create a network with one of the computers, then join the other to it. You will only be able to access files in the shared folders from here though, I don't know how to open up the entire h/d to another computer.

Is there really not a way to just plug to computers together and run one as a slave? I know you can do this with mac laptops - hold down whatever key it is on startup and the laptops hard drives appear as external drives on the other computer - thats with a usb lead... No way to do that here?

Sorry about the wrong info! I dont really know a whole lot about networks as I am not using one.

Cool well my other pc is off right now so I cant see it in "My Network" but will try it out tomorrow when i boot up that pc.

Would a Cross-over cable work for this? I heard you can plug two computers into each other via a x-over.

Yes a crossover cable will work to network the 2 PC's. What u wanna do is to go start/control panel/network connections.

Once there right click on your local area connection and go to properties. Select Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click on properties.

Once in that screen choose the option "Use the following IP" set that computer as 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and click Ok. Do this same thing to the other PC but put a different IP, ie: 192.168.1.2 and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask, click ok.

Now go to Start/Run/CMD. Lets say your on the PC with the IP 192.168.1.1 type in "Ping 192.168.1.2" (without the ") to see if they are connected properly and receiving the packets. If the ping is successful and the PC sends 4 packets and received 4 now u can go ahead and share the folder you would like.

Right click on the folder/properties/sharing, and share this folder. Now go to the other comp and go to my computer. In the address bar type in \\(IP address of the computer sharing the folder.) ie: \\192.168.1.1. Both computer needs to have a username and password. It will ask you for it to be able to access the files on that PC. Put the username and pass when prompted and you should be able to access the files being shared.
