4G of 800 or 2G of 1066 or higher?

ya 4gb i dont know if this would matter but i did the math 4 x 800 = 3200 and 1066 x 2 = 2132... I dont know if you would do it like that but if you do 4gb>2gb

Isn't unused RAM idle, making it basically functionless? I'd think that unless you need a ton of RAM and plan on utilizing that much that faster RAM would be better. If my program took 1.5 gigs I'd rather run it on DDR2-1066 than DDR2-800, or am I missing something?

800mhz ram is plenty fast. 1066 is not worth it.

having said that tho. even with vista ultimate i hardly use my 2gb so i would get the 1066.

but usually i would say the 4 gb 800

i dont want to hijack this thread or anything but i have a very similar question: would it be better to use 2gb of 800mhz (2x1gb 800mhz) or 3gb of 667 mhz (2x1gb 800mzh + 2x512mb 667mhz)? it will run on 32bit XP.

personally i would go with 2x800 cos i dont use up much ram. but if your doing stuff that is requiring more ram then amount is prefered over speed.

Get the 4GB, you won't notice the difference between DDR2 800 and DDR2 1066 anyways except for in benchmarks, but you will notice a difference between 2GB and 4GB.

Err sorry to interupt, if i use 2 gig of ram in dual channel mode and i put another 1 gig identical ram would the dual channel function still work?
As i know each mb had its own ram slot (same colour) to identified the dual channel function.

What!? What exactly are you saying? :P

im saying: 800 mhz speed is fast enough by todays standards. 1066 is usually more expensive and therefore not worth it. but i however dont use much of my full 2gb 800mhz. so it would be better for me to upgrade to higher speed ram then to 4 gb 800mhz. haha

I gotcha. Believe it or not, it's better to have at least 3GB with Vista. I'll shoot you a screenshot later of how much memory is eaten up while gaming - it's above 2GB. ;)
