So I took Vista off the laptop..

First off welcome to CF. Secondly never listen to anything windowsvista tells you because he's retarded.

If the laptop shipped with Vista installed chances are the hardware is not going to have available drivers for XP without doing a lot of searching. HP is not going to ever send you an actual 'vista' boot disc, only recovery discs. However, does your laptop have a recovery partition?

In that case your going to have to scour and find an appropriate driver for your wireless card. What card do you have? If there is no driver available, then I hate to say it but your screwed without buying a Vista install disc.

you can try, some do. the graphics and sound driver for my laptop worked from the cd when i upgraded to xp from the factory installed vista

Thats what sucks about HP. They never give you the original install disk. They only give you recovery disks which you still need the partition on your hard drive in order to use. Good luck finding the right drivers!

What are the components? if you post them here we might be able to find drivers. For all components, not just the sound card, as the HP drivers aren't always the newest/best.

I went to the Hp site and downloaded and installed a few drivers for xp
and the sound card driver would not install.
and the wireless still does not work.. I used another laptop to get drivers.

so hp does have xp drivers.

does hp require the installation to follow a certain order? my sony sz320 does. if you deviate from that order then things won't work/install. check for documentation about this

Well, you can avoid buying another copy of Vista by downloading it through torrents, then burning it to a disc, which despite popular believe is not illegal. When you buy Vista, your paying for the installation key, not the 50 cent disc it comes on. Your key should be on the bottom of your laptop. If you insist on XP the only thing you can do is scour the internet for drivers. Sound and Video drivers should be easy to find. Conexant and Nvidia definately have XP drivers.

Try that for your wireless adapter

Can you do me a favour? Please download PC Wizard from my sig and install it. Go to FILE< SAVE AS and click ok. Then copy the contents of that text file into this thread.

I think the problem is because you haven't installed the chipset drivers.

I did the same exact thing to my dv6000. I bought a dv9000 and wanted to see if installing XP on the 6000 would speed it up and it stepped on the drivers and it has all of the problems you explained. I was able to connect to the internet via a 54mps USB wireless connector but the choppy scrolling pretty much still renders it useless.

I wish you luck man... I tried to do the same on one of my first dv6000s and failed miserably. HP provided no drivers for my hardware and more generic drivers were scarce or didn't seem to work well. After trying for hours, I finally got everything but the wireless card to work, at which point I could basically install any driver successfully yet it wouldn't work. On top of this, I'd get random blue screens and other problems; perhaps related to the semi-incompatible drivers... If we have a list of your hardware (does PC Wizard tell you without drivers loaded?) then perhaps we could help you, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's even possible or worth the trouble...

This is actually wrong. If you closely read the EULA of windows and the company you bought the laptop from, that copy of Windows is bound to your laptop and can not be transferred in any way shape or form. In fact legally you don't own it, but are actually leasing it.

It is still way illegal to download another copy, even if you have a legal copy sitting on your self. You are still violating the EULA.

The only way to have legal software is to buy it, period. If you buy a system with xp or vista preloaded that copy is non transferable to any other system, it has to stay with the factory machine period.

Interesting, didn't exactly read the EULA. So if you were to say scratch your Vista disc, you'd have to flat out buy another one, even though your key is still valid? Stupid Microsoft... I think it's safe to say when my disc gets munged up I won't be running out to buy another copy.

I guess theoretically you would, but IMO as long as you have a legitimate CD Key, I see no reason why if something happens to your original disc why you can't use another copy of Windows, as you aren't actually taking anything that you didn't pay for.
