I was wondering if I could get some input on what hardware I should use for piecing together a new desktop for doing music recording in the studio.

Good Sound Card.
Quad Core
2GB Ram
I'll post some links from new egg soon...
Do we have a budget???
I would find a sound card that supports has midi inputs/outputs. If you're doing studio recording, you'll need something to hook mics into like an m-box, unless you want to go directly from your mixer board to your comp, not sure exactly how to do that, but someone here probably will.
Aren't most modern MIDI devices connected via USB? My synthesizer is...
And I'm not quite sure if sound-editing programs can take advantage of four cores, a fast c2d might be a better call? Correct me if need be.
Well yeah, but generally you'll get better recording quality with a sound card made for studio recording.
I don't see a price on there, but yeah that would work great, however it all depends on his budget. If he really has money, I would buy a nice mixing board, a nice amp and a nice preamp, then he could have himself a nice little studio.
Apple. Enough said.

I dont like apple and I kinda agree with you. Apple is better with vid though!
Yeah but it depends on software. - Apple are for more video editting, photos, etc.
I like apple, but for this sort of stuff i won't go for them. Agree with they are better for videos.
Windows will support most software and it would be hard to find stuff the compatible with an "apple workstation / or product".
Heres the best speakers you can get, well maybe! Logitech rocks!!!
