It's either the little speaker on the motherboard that beeps when you startup/if you don't have audio drivers installed/when you do something it doesn't like, like hold down more than two keys on a PS/2 keyboard, or,

Some optical drives when a chirp like noise when they're about to start reading something. This would be not as loud, and a little more "chirp"ish than the other possibility.

Either way it's normal.

i think i know what you're talking about, i think it might be from the hard drive if it almost sounds like a "tink"(well, thats what it sounds like in my opinion)

Yeah its your hdd!! The way that just_a_noob exlains it is good. Mine does it too every once in a while. It is just doing it because the hard drive is spinning up.

so my hard drive just recently started spinning?
its never spun in its life?

you rarely hear it, i think its just when it starts to spin up for access or storing might be when you hear, if then

My PC makes strange noises at times, it happens...

When I put strain on my graphics card after an overclock, I sometimes get a 'whining noise'... This is probably coils in the PSU vibrating because they're having to put out more juice to the card... Nothing to worry about! :)

no..

i hear it every few seconds to every few minutes

Then you might want to be worried. Is it kinda a clicking noise? If so then, I would back up your important data to some dvd's or an external hdd incase your hdd takes a dump. Be prepared to have a spot in the budget for a new hdd incase it does happen.

yeah, just like g25 says back up your data, it sounds like its gunna crap its guts and info all over your case

LOL Yeah since the day ive got my new pc I have been backing up data to dvd's. I also have a 2gb flash drive that I just got for $10 so im using that to.

our computer keeps prompting us to make backup dvds, im probably going to be eating that laziness later on, i think im just gunna buy a 250gb external drive and backup everything on this comp lol

Hasnt made any noises in atleast 30 minutes now.

dont know whats goin on.
dont have anything important on here to back up
this is just an every day use internet browsing, music listening to computer
lots of music on here.
but im not worried about losing the music.
would take too many cd's to back it all up

noise sounds like a condenser on a AC unit on a car or truck kicking on or off

Well i think it happend..

computer started up fine.
the noise began, which was normal.
couple programs loaded.
i startd opening web pages. and then i got a quick blue screen.
right b4 the blue screen my computer froze and the noise from the hard drive area of my computer began but was non stop.

computer shut down and restarted.
upon restart i got th first screen, then it closed and
began the 2nd start up process screen thing which is a screen that
says its detecting drives,memory, etc.

it doesnt leave that screen.
eventually it tells me to insrt my system disc.
i insert it and hit enter
and the computer starts up off the disc.
During the first try i went through and tried to restore my computer.
Completed the process, restartd the computer without the disc and the same thing happend.

Computer only runs with th system disc.

So what is it?
did the hard drive infact fail?
i've lost everything as far as i can see.
just would like some input before i drop the computer off
with my computer mechanic guy.

Thanks

If the chirp is not an electronic sound then it is most likely your hard drive. If that is the case you might want to back up your data elsewhere and get it replaced before you lose it.

Its already gone, and i didnt have anything to back up.
Only had a bunch of music files which are replaceable.
And my pictures were all saved on Photobucket
