Problem with my sound card?

My speakers work fine, yet when I play music or video no sound comes out. When I turn the volume up high though, I can still hear the white noise. Do I need to reset my sound card?

What sort of sound card do you have???

Is it on the motherboard???

Or is it another card???

That's the thing. I have no idea. All I know is that the speakers work in other computers and media and they worked the first time I plugged them into mine. But the last time I restarted my computer, they no longer worked. And yes, I've since tested them and they work fine.
