Not long enough?

I plug the cable into my IDE1 slot on my motherboard and then i plug the other end into my CD/DVD drive. But there is not enough room to plug my HD in and have the HD in the right slot in my case. Do I need a longer cable or am I doing something wrong? Im new to building so sorry if this is a stupid question.

From what I gather, you need a longer cable.

They do make longer cables, if you can't mount the hard drive in a place where the cable can reach, then you will be better off simply buying a longer cable.

which do I put as my primary and my slave? CD Drive and HD

If I remember right they are color coded, the Blue plug to Motherboard, Black (furthest one) to primary (HD) and grey to slave.

HDD is always primary. Secondary is the Optical Drives, and the "other" stuff.
