Is it possible to load an OS onto a HDD that is not formated? it doesnt already have an OS on it just some music and pictures with loads of space left.

When you install an OS, the install utility will format the hard drive for you.
A hard drive has to be formatted in order for the operating system to be installed.
Think of formatting as those preprinted blue lines on looseleaf paper and in notebooks (the kind you write in). Those lines designate where you write.
With hard drives, formatting prepares the hard drive to store information.
I was thinking that he bought a hard drive off the shelf,
Sorry
Well if that was the case then it would need to be formatted.
If it has files on it - go right ahead and install the OS. No need to for a reformat.
