Hi,,

I have a 2002 version of Windows XP that is set to format HD only up to 170 GB.

I need a program or driver that will format the drive before I install Windows XP so the Windows XP version I have will not be formatting a 500 GB drive to 179 GB.You cant imagine how frustrating the the last two installs have been.

So what is out there???

IF anyone has a NEwer copy of XP home basic laying around that they would not mind letting go of.Give me a shout.

If you have a old copy of XP its a 127-132 GB limit not 170. The easiest way is to download SP2 and Slipstream it with nLite to your XP cd and the Slipstream copy will see all 500gb. And if you ever reinstall you wont have to fool with it anymore.

Know anyone with a full install copy of Vista? Before a full install competes you can use that or GParted live to see the approximate 465gb primary created and proceed to use the Vista drive tools format option there and then cancel the installation. The XP installer will automatically format an existing partition once that is created by a 3rd party drive tool like GParted, Partition Magic, or some other program.

The lack of SP1 is what limits the XP installer to 137gb since the SP1 equipped recovery disk used here on an older build had no problem initially partitioning and formatting a 250gb drive. SP1 addressed the 137gb barrier. Also make sure the LBA mode is enabled in the bios for large capacity support if this is on an older system.

Thanks for the PM about Nlite.I am going to give that a shot when I have more time to spend.Right now I am going to just use the format tools provided by the disk manufacture.
