idk about that last bit.... i couldnt understand it, but u can take an internal drive and make it into an external drive for use on another computer. You would take the internal HDD and place it into one of these:http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=CSEwould it be possible to take a hard drive from one desktop computer that is the exact same as another. and connect a USB to it to form an external hard drive for the other computer?
It certainly would! You would want to get an external Harddrive case, which you will put the drive in and it will connect via USB to the PC. Make sure it matches the drive (either SATA or IDE).
easiest way to tell if its SATA or IDE? lol...sorry im new to this...
A SATA drive would have a small flat cable about 1/2" wide, while a IDE drive would have a flat, ribbed ribbon cable about 2" wide.easiest way to tell if its SATA or IDE? lol...sorry im new to this...
aight, preciate it guys. you've been a ton of help.
basically me and my brother both got the same computer a couple years back. but he fried his mother board, and bought a new computer. so i was wanting to take his hard drive out of his old computer, and connect as a backup/external on mine so i can store all my music on one
why not put it internally or it is going walk about??
That is a good idea, but most mobos only give you a IDE port for optical drives...
You'll need to format it first.
im not sure if my comp has storage for 2 hard drives internally...guess i could check on that...lol. if i put it internally i wouldnt need a case would i?
yea, i know ill need to format it. which i can do.
when you say most mobos only give IDE's for opticals, i could still get a case, put it externally, and hook it up through firewire or usb right?
Are there IDE ports that only work for optical drives? That's something I've never heard of...
Right... just though it was weird when people say that newer MoBos come with 1 IDE port *for optical drives*... well now I'm clear on that.
