How to do this?

My mate is coming over and I want to LAN him.

How do I set up a basic lan between my PC and his.

Btw at the moment I have a router that has one Ethernet cable port, and one USB one.

So if he were using the usb one and I the ethernet one, what do I do to get lan going?

you are running locally and your router gives DHCP right ? then just get a network cable for him plug him in and make sure on his end, file and printer sharing is set to on, otherwise he might not be seen on the network.

or if that's too much hassle, the simple way, get a crossover cable ,and assign your computers to static IP's.

Okay I don't have any idea what you just said hahaha.

Could you maybe put it in stupid words?

lol.

What do you mean by "LAN him"..

If you want to play against/with him, on a game that supports the LAN feature, plug him into the same router your plugged into, via Ethernet, then go on the game and play.

But the router I have only has one ethernet out and one usb out?

Anyway of getting around this?

oh yeah my router has only 1 Ethernet out too i didn't even notice :D,

is yours a bit like this ?
in such cases you either just plug a switch (if you have one) in the ethernet out of the router then plug you and your friend in the switch.
it's not a pretty neat idea cause you are "still" on the internet and might have problems seeing each other.
If i were you i'd get a Crossover cable (get one at the stores).

edit :
this also depends on the router, in my case for example, my ISP will need to give me 2 IP cause my so-called router does not have built in dhcp

Why dont you just plug his in via USB. My brothers pc used to get internet over USB through our twowire gateway modem. It was only about 230kb/s but that should be enough for any gaming.

Your modem should have come with a manual, cable, and CD that tells you how. If not, you might try looking on your ISP/modem's site for the software. If still not, your going to need to get a couple of network cables and a switch.

Modem<network cable>switch<network cable>two computers

Hope this helps :).

USB is slow! Those are not routers either! They are modems. And you cant plug in a usb and an ethernet at the same time!
