Activation

My new laptop came with linux.
My dads laptop has xp home.
I have installed xp home onto my laptop using the windows xp key on the bottom of his laptop. The only thing left now is to activate it.
I will install linux on my dads laptop and then activate the xp home on my laptop.

The only thing is, his xp key sticker says Asus on it and I'm wondering if that will make problems with activation. When trying to install windows media player 11 and when it said validation required to continue installation it said "this version of windows is not genuine".
I assume I should not connect to the internet yet while my dads xp home is still up and running.

Also, i installed xp home from an sp1 cd and then installed sp2 from a cd. I had to install sp2 in safe mode because with sp1 it said i had to activate windows before I could logon.

Any help/advice?

hi mate
i ve had this problem before i take it you have tryed ot activate over the internet and the os was found to be a possible fake
if you can still get to the activation screen choose the option to activate via phone and just ring microsoft and ask for an activcation code (you may need to go through a recording attempting to activate which will fail, then you will be automatically transfered to an operative) this works in all cases, just say you are re-installing, however if you cant reach that screen you may need to reinstall xp and then choose to activate via phone, feel free to pm me if i havent been to clear

Hi mate.
Got it.
i haven't tried the activation yet because my dads laptop is still running on the xp (haven't formatted it yet) and I guessed trying to activate my copy of the same windows would end in problems - or would it? If you know the answer to that would be great because then i could connect to the net today wthout having to wait to format my dads laptop!

yopmemama's solution may work but the copy of XP on your Dads laptop is tied to that laptop (hence Asus on the sticker).
This is the nature of OEM copies of Windows. It can only be used on the machine that it was originally installed on. It cannot be transfered to any other machine.
If yopmemama's solution works, then good, but you will be breaking the copy infringement law.

In this case, I agree. The system builders license can be transferred, however.

If Microsoft activates it, then I don't see any problems, even though the key is only suppose to be used with the Asus machine.

Hello!
Thanks for all your replies.

So it all worked. I installed Linux on my dad's laptop and have successfully activated his Home edition XP on my Benq laptop over the phone, no questions asked.

I may now go about trying to duplicate the sticker the best I can and whack it on the bottom of my machine :P

Thanks again!

You are joking right? Faking the sticker just aint worth it... You'll get into even more trouble if caught with a fake sticker

Yeah, I read it.

your right. the original owner can easily transfer with a phone call and get a new key. More power to him. It worked.........good.
he will find out when he takes the update.

the license is hardware oriented. If you give me your installation cd i promise i will have to buy it. then again i use a xp professional corporate. I hate buying sheet..........Your comment is correct. at least esthetically. I think they will figure it out in this case. i hope it works. i don't have a problem with. good luck.

Thats just their rules, it can be done. I,ve installed OEMs and System Builders on other computers. It all depends on who answers the phone and what questions they ask, and what answers you choose to give;).

I think you guys smoke too much pot. lmao

Ok, seriously.. I think you guys are getting confused. OEM and System Builder license are two different things.

I have a system builder pack sitting on the floor here beside me. There's a system builder license on the pack that outlines what you can do with the software. What it tells you is that you may only distribute the software according to the EULA... blah blah blah.

That license is NOT transferrable in any way, shape or form.

The EULA, which is what binds the OP, states that the OEM software must be provided with a piece of equipment essential to the core functions of the computer and that the software is tied to the system it's installed on (which, ultimately, boils down to the mobo, really).

It is NOT transferrable either. Whether it can be done or not is another story. Anything can be done if you use your brains. I have a dozen ways of getting around things like that.. The only time I use them is when I'm forced to.

For example, I had a client buy licenses to comply with the WPA. Every time you booted the computer it said "Windows needs to be activated before you can log on". You click ok and it says "Windows is already activated" and you get stuck in an endless loop. After four calls to Microsoft, with a fresh installation id each time and two repair installs later.. I got pissed off. So.. I hacked it. Done deal. He's still the legitimate owner.. MS couldn't fix the problem.. So I did.
