Upgradeable Laptop Parts?

With all of the recent advances in technology such as super HD or what ever they call it, and games like Crysis with advanced physics and such, why can't they make upgradeable laptops? Consumers can upgrade their desktops with ease, but making an upgradeable laptop wouldn't be that hard nowadays. When ever you buy a new laptop, it becomes obsolete within three years. It could be as simple as unscrewing the bottom and putting in new parts, all they need is for companies to sell the parts and it could be good...

the only problem with laptop upgrades is the parts can cost 3x as much as the "equivalent" desktop part, and you wont even get the same performance out of it. a lot a laptops have to have parts wielded in and securely fastened due to the fact that they are being moved around.. a lot... and then there is the cooling situation, the parts have to be placed in such a way to keep them from overheating.. this comes back to the way they are secured to the laptop...

all in all its not going to happen and if you want to use laptops be prepared to pay for a new one every 2 -3 years, or pay vast amounts of money for a Top-of-the-line one.

Thanks for the input, but what if they made one that was possible for the general public to upgrade?

You can upgrade a laptop's hard drive and ram fairly easily. Some laptops, however, it is harder to upgrade the graphics and cpu.

yeah true, laptops with Nvdia 6-Series onwards and ATi cards usually have upgradeable GPU's. some laptops do have upgradeable Processors.

but the issue isnt just whether its upgradeable its whether you are able to get something that is compatible.

i think if they started making laptops that were upgradeable by the general public the price would be high and the parts are usually expensive anyway, so most people would not be able to afford / will be put off, by that. and it would probably work out cheaper to send it back to the manufacturer for the upgrade.

I never knew you could send it back to the manufacturer for upgrade, I thought it was permanent?

some manufacturers allow you to send your laptop back to them for HDD upgrades, RAM upgrades, i am unsure about Video card and Processor, but i think it varies between manufacturer, just takes a bit of research to find out who does what.

For alienware laptops, upgrading the hard drive and ram yourself does not void the warranty. Alienware also allows you to send it in to get things like the cpu and graphics card upgraded. However, if you want to buy a hard drive from alienware to use, they will send it to you. For something like a CPU, it is harder to upgrade so they do it.
