i want to connect my laptop to my television to watch movies. What is the best way to do it. My laptop has VGA, and my computer has HDMI. What are the names of the cable(s) i would need. Are there any disadvatages in doing this. Would i get a picture if i used my desktop with a video card and DVI connections?

You can buy a VGA to DVI adapter and run a DVI to HDMI cable to the TV. The resolution will be limited as you are bottlenecked at the VGA. Your desktop compiuters video card can go from DVI to HDMI but unless it is a new graphics card you might have blur problems as AGP video cards seem to have problems. Some of the newer PCI-E cards have whats called HDMI over DVI which gives you a much better picture. HTH

Eh, I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. DVI can carry both digital and analog signals, but I believe HDMI can only take the digital signal...

yep, what the_other_one said. plus, i thinkd they only make dvi to vga adapters. Kittysackattack, does your tv have any other inputs? you can get a vga to composite or vga to s-video adapter.
