Want to be able to game. School work. Music, web camera (internet capabilities obviously).

It has to look at least somewhat nice.

Buying in a couple of weeks. Want laptop to last very long time.

Notebook Components

16) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 500GB?
At least 160 gigs

17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

CD and DVD rom.

18) RAM?
At least 2 gigs.

I borrowed questions from another thread. I'm not to savvy with computers, so I greatly appreciate any help.
 
Look at a Lenovo, or an Acer you get more for your buck. You can get a crazy deal with Dell and their coupons but their parts are a bit sub par.

Or look at HP business class. I have had a lot of HP business class laptops in my control (thousands) and I found them to be all around pretty decent machines. Don't confuse this with HP consumer products which are not as good IMO.
 
If you use it for game, you would need a delicated GPU. However, in that case, your battery will hardly last longer 4 hours

For your budget, you could get
intel C2D CPU (preferbly T7XXX or T8XXX)
min. 2 GB RAM (as you said)
min. 8600m GT/ 9500m GS
 
go for a mac :P 5 hours :P but the more you use the laptop on the battery the longer it will last... i used a dell and on the battery it use to last 2 hours now it last 3.5 hours!

Suggestions like those aren't helpful. Your personal experiences with Dell don't mean much by itself so keep them to yourself

likewise you don't represent all HP users.
 
Dell have had the most recalls of their laptops than any other manufacturer in the last 4 years. They have also been widely criticized for using sub par, generic, proprietary parts. How do you think Dell can slash the price of a 2,000 dollar laptop down to 1300 and still make enough money to stay in business? The margin of profit of hardware sales is very minimum, typically never over 10% of actual cost.

If you scour through digg.com you will find an article that is from this year stating that Dell is finally raising their standards in the parts they use. I know for a fact that HP uses Asus motherboards in their desktop. This is because I used to support thousands of HP desktops and when I had to replace a motherboard I would see the Asus silk screened on the motherboard. They also use MSI and abit. Of course they don't always use the highest end motherboards but at least they are name brand. Unlike some manufacturers that just use the cheapest parts assembled by 12 year old factory workers in Malaysia some where.
