2gig or 4

i run 2GB on my desktop and it is fine... do upgrade the ram you have to have a good CPU.

What is the CPU??? Speed etc...

so if its so unclear about how much memory xp can actually use why does everyone seem so sure. the way i see it, its better to have a little more than what will get used than a little less...

If you thinking about the xp x64bit. do your research. Driver's like for web camera's and some older printer/scanners will not work for x64 xp. I run a duel boot because of my camera and my spysweeper program. I really love the x64 tho. if it wasn't for the spysweeper and the webcam. I stay in it all the time. Also some burning software will not run with it too.

if it was me id buy 4gigs 2x2gb, then you have xp 32bit maxed out and you already have the memory when you upgrade to vista. check the speed of your hdd. if it is 5300rpm, upgrade to 7200rpm

7200rpm 160g I'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming to "upgrade" to vista.
