install 2 OS

hey guys

I want to install a windows xp on my friend laptop, VAIO VNG-FZ 250 .
It has already windows Vista installed on it.

My friend insist on keeping windows vista, and want to have 2 OS.
I wanted to know if i just manually install windows xp on that machine, will that work ?

I'll make a custom windows xp with nLite (as the laptop doesn't have FDD, and uses SATA hard drive), then everything the same or i have to do something especial for having 2 OS ?

thanks

You'll need to create a seperate partition for XP. After installing XP, you'll need to do a Vista Startup Repair as the XP installation will rewrite the boot sector. The repair will give you a standard Windows boot menu so you can boot between the two OSes.

With nLite, I'm assuming you're going to slipstream the SATA drivers, correct? If not, you may need those drivers to successfully install XP.

Since windows xp doesn't recognize sata hard drives and needs the drivers through floppy (with that f6 menu ...), and the laptop doesn't have fdd, So i guess i create a custom win xp with nLite. which put (inject) sata drivers into winxp then i don't have to go through f6 menu. right?

Yes, that will work.

That will also work. If you already have a seperate partition setup, you can install XP on that partition. Make sure you backup any data on that partition - everything will be wiped before the installation.

Yeah, that's right. You can slipstream the drivers into the installation disk with nLite.

thanks, so last things :

1. i make a partition with partition magic or through win xp setup ?

2. after installing win xp , where to find that vista repair thing ?

You can't use Partition Magic with Vista, but you can use Acronis Disk Director or GParted.

You'll need the Vista install disk, or you can download a program called VistaBootPro. Install the program in XP and select the "Reinstall Vista Bootloader" option.

VistaBootPro is a rippoff of the Neosmart EasyBCD tool! The latest 1.7.2 version is available at http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

GParted will work quite well for seeing the second primary created following the shrinkage needed with the Vista primary to see enough drive space available. Not all laptops or desktops require a driver disk to see XP go on a sata at this time.

What most don't realize is that newer chipsets see XP go on without fuss or the second install screen with the "press S for special devices" option brings up a list of chipsets where selecting the closest one will then see the XP installer readily detect the sata drive.

A friend running an Asus A8V model board couldn't get XP on a Sata I type 200gb drive with repeat attempts with floppies. One press of the S key saw XP go right on with ease! The Asus M2N-E AM2 board here will see XP go on without any of that. It depends on the board and chipset there.

One thing to know about a dual boot of XP along with Vista. Unless the Vista partition/drive is hidden from XP all Vista restore points are automatically canceled out once you boot into XP! Currently I've been working with a still beta tool that hides Vista from XP and sees all restore points left intact when dual booting. Maybe sometime that will be available for download?! It does work well however.

xp doesnt recognize some sata hdds i didnt have to install ne drivers for my sata hdd actually ive only had to do that in one build

Its not the drives so much as the chipset on the board in question that plays the largest role. XP sadly lacks the generic sata drivers seen with Vista being the new version since ide drives were the norm when XP first came out. Boards generally saw a need for an addon controller card for SCSI or sata type drives to begin with.

Since that time the trend has been towards sata since that offers a faster bus while the hard drives still see the physical ATA limitations and don't gain much over ide models at this point except thinner data cables allowing better air flow in cases. Since OSs are preinstalled on Sony Vaios the problem comes when trying to go through their support information along with driver support for a laptop more there.

I used sony live chat :) and yea as you said they are "okay" .

But they said there's no win xp driver available atm. (they said they only have drivers for the current installED OS.)

so it is the end of the line? Or i can do some tricks?

In the device manager, you can allow Windows XP to search for drivers for the unrecoginized devices. Chances are you won't find any, but it's up to you to decide if it's worth your time. I'm not sure if there's anything else you can do.

You're probably going to be wasting time since the system sounds too new and came with Vista preinstalled. There are no XP driver unlike seen with Dell and their option for choosing the OS on their new models. The drivers were never written since the entire system was geared for Vista. ut oh...

yea you guys are totally right.

I was wondering Sony is producing any inside kit for its laptops? i mean maybe the graphic card is made by another company ... (I'm just looking chances)

Yeah, the graphics are Intel. Take a look through the link below. Search around the Intel site - you may be able to find the chipset drivers as well. Still though, there are many integrated components in that laptop that could be without XP drivers.

Don't feel too bad about not seeing XP on. Once I upgraded out of an older Socket A build there was no 98SE driver for the 939 board to be found! I had been multibooting XP and 98SE along with Fedora Core 4 at the time until needing a new build.

Gee? No more Duke Nukem 3D that old dos/95/98 game aww crap! That was some good alien blasting back in those days! :P Well at least DOSBox allows the original 8bit dos version to run through a virtual window on Vista too.

Yea, the most reason he wants to have xp on, is there are plenty of engineering programs he want to have installed, which he says he can't.

you mentioned dosbox, is there any kind of environment he could use so that make him able to run those programs in vista?

I still haven't got anywhere quite yet with the Microsoft Virtual PC or VMware virtual player either for trying to set up a virtual environment for older apps. The right click on shortcut and run in 95-XP mode option found there is practically useless since often the software's own installer won't run on Vista if written strictly for XP.

It can awkward for video capturing programs and tv tuner softwares as well as any Delta CAD apps meant for an older version as well. But then there's the option of setting up a dual boot of both versions in order to still be able to run older softwares. I have to keep XP on here until eventually finding newer versions for certain softwares that were in regular use on XP.

The real fun is how ironic it is seeing an old 8bit dos game run on Vista while nothing else does at times! Duke is still getting around while Metal of Honor: Allied Assault won't even install. Many desktop softwares never run on the next version of Windows quite often as expected. People hated XP at first just like ME and 2000 when running 98 for the same there.

IMO I guess it would be a big success if microsoft could make its newer versions at least be able to run older programs. I don't know if it is impossible or doesn't worth the time and effort it could take to make such thing.

I have 4GB ram, The first OS i tried was win xp x64. But it took like 2 days which i switched back to win xp.I was surprised that almost i could run nothing on it.

Well i guess we at least give Microsoft Virtual PC or VMware virtual player a shot.
One of the programs that must run is "Dig Silence".
