:( Ok here we go. This is my second computer build. The first one went quite well. This one however is a nightmare. This is what I have and don't know what else to do. All my parts were purchased through tigerdirect. Windows XP home edition sp2 OEM Version, Masscool cpu fan 3.6 ghz, OCZ Vista upgrade edition PC6400 DDR2 800MH 4096 mb, Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2Ghz 1MB 800Mhz,Biostar P4M890-M7 TE Socket 775 motherboard, Diablotek CP-6004 black ATX mid-t case with 400 watt power supply. The hard drive is a used western digital wd300bb. I was very carefull about puting everything together. I was able to get windows installed with a lot of errors but I was up and going. I then installed the drivers for the motherboard and attempted to download the windows security updates but was unsuccessfull with the windows update. While viewing a news video my computer shut down and restarted in the middle of the video. After a couple of times of doing this I repositioned the cpu fan. That seemed to fix it on shuting down and restarting. The next thing it started doing was locking up. The key board quit and the mouse. The news video I was trying to watch just froze and ever sense then I have not been able to get it to reboot. I have attempted to reinstall windows but it locks up before I can get even close to compleating the install. I repositioned the CPU fan again, I removed the memory and reinstalled it. The only thing connected to the mother board is the A-drive (used) and the CD-rom (used). They both were working fine in the old computer they come out of. Does anyone have any Idea where my troubles are? I am thinking the powersupply or the motherboard. I do not have another power supply to check it with. I have tried to change the bios to different settings with no luck. I reset the bios to default and that did not help either. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess would be the MoBo. Usually failing (keyboard, USB, etc.) ports are one of the tell-tale signs. You could try resetting CMOS (read your Mother Board's manual for the how-to), but my $ would be on the Board itself. It should still be in the Return/Exchange-window, so just call up TD and arrange for one. Up to you if you want to stick with another Biostar or go for another brand (Abit and Gigabyte are great as far as quality goes).

I'd also take a quick look at your XP CD just to make sure no scratches or anything.

Thanks. I will pull the Motherboard and return. We'll wee what happens this weekend when I get the new one. Thanks again. MJM

When you say you repositioned the CPU fan did you move or take off the Heatsink? If so did you reapply thermal paste? Sounds like a ram, heat or power supply issue to me.

Yes Repositioned the heat sink and regreased. Also tried removing one memory stick then replace it with the other. Next step will to be to replace the power supply once I get the new Motherboard back in.
