So my birthday is coming up. Plan on getting around $500. Just curious as to how good of a comp I could build with this bidget. Wondering if anyone wanted to throw one together for me.. I am in the US and would like to use newegg.

I have:

Cooler Master 460W PSU

320gb Maxtor HD

I was thinkin of starting with this..

XION II XON-101 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply - Retail

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

MSI NX8800GTS 320M OC GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2.4GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADO4600CZBOX - Retail

Rosewill RCX-Z4 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler - Retail

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM

Thats $446.95
should be 'round $410 with mail in rebates

Feel free to use some of these items, or none of them. Thanks in advance.

What about RAM? Do you already have these?

The processor is kinda weak, but I fully understand a budget. Have you thought about going with intel and a 775 socket motherboard? They are a little more expensive...I know. That processor actually has some great reviews on a couple sites, even newegg.

For $20 more you could get a nice upgrade to an
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor

Just an idea.

Or you could save your money for a little while longer and get some higher performance parts....I think you will be happy in the long run. That's what I have learned during my builds, just save for the better parts....It's hard not to just buy a part and get your system up but in the end you'll be much more pleased.

Good luck!

if you want to stay amd, get a 5000+ black edition that way its atleast overclockable through the multiplier, and not just the fsb

I dont care whether its AMd or Intel. I was just looking for a board that would work with graphics card. And for the use.. Some games. CoD Battlefield Counter-Strike..

or a E2200

And the video card to a 9600gt any day

"I would highly recomend an Intel Processor. In my opinion they are way better than AMD processors."

Remember, this guy has a budget of $500. At that budget, AMD and Intel pretty much even out IMO, with AMD possibly being better, especially without any overclocking. At any rate, there will be little difference. AMD didn't stop making quality processors just because Intel holds the high-end throne currently.

Connor.S I take that your looking to keep using this pc your building for a while, are my right?

If so don't do any overclock, it will shorten the cpu's life more then what common people would think.

Don't put overclock into your build equation. it will not do you any good in the long run if you don't plan on upgrading the pc your building anytime soon.

Other than the overclock, members here will take care of you for sure.

have fun building your pc.

So many replies. thanks all.

I dont plan on doing any overclocking. Just looking for the best cpu in my budget. and for the graphics, they dont have to be the best. But I just want a drastic change in them from my 6800... crap. I was just thinking the 8800.. maybe.

Look at the 8800GS. Very good performance for the price.
