I have an old p4 prebuilt and it is running so slow that even doing casual surfing is difficult. The system comes with:

intel p4 1.8ghz
256mb pc2100 ddr 266
Asus P4S-LA motherboard sis 650 chipset
onboard shared 32mb vram
40gb hdd ide 7200rpm > just upgraded to 80gb hdd
200W matx power supply
windows xp home edition

I have a few questions to clarify prior to upgrading. At the same times also wanted to check compatibilty before purchasing the parts for upgrade.

1. On the specifications link, it shows that the Asus P4S-LA supports PC2100 ram which is what the BIOS is showing too. But why does the sticker label on the ram shows PC2100 133 instead of 266? I am confused whether could it using the PC 133 instead?

2. The motherboard has 2 dimm memory sockets up to max 2gb. Is it advisable to buy all the way straight 1gb or 256mb or 512mb to see a noticable performance gain?

3. Would the Asus P4S-LA supports the Sapphire 9550 AGP graphic card? It is 4x and the card is 8x?http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/produ...?gpid=56&grp=2
What is the Ultra AGP 2 that is stated under http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...rodu ct=75904
Is it the same as AGP?

4. How does the Sapphire 9550 against the nvidia FX5200?

5. Is there a neccesity to upgrade the power supply too? Can the power supply take the load?

Lastly, are there any bottlenecks?

Appreciate.

No no, don't get PC133! PC2100 = DDR266. PC2700 = DDR333. PC3200 = DDR400. You can only use PC2100/DDR266.

Get 1GB. Either one 1GB stick (more expensive), or 2x 512MB sticks.

Asus link does not work, but if you see a brownish AGP slot, then you have one. I'd expect it to be 4x/8x... (if you have one)..

FX5200 can play better games than the 9550...

Yes, 200W is TINY. I'd go with the hec Orion 585W. If your case is a standard ATX case.

Yes, plenty. RAM is VERY slow, processor is horrible... ect...

You're better off with a new computer. $400-$300 could get you something nice.

Dont even upgrade that pc. Its not worth the time or the money to do so. You are better off just getting a new prebuilt pc and working with that.

Or a custom

The RAM itself (1GB) will most likely be more expensive than a 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 kit.

I wouldn't do anything with that computer besides adding mroe ram. Any other upgrades would be a waste of money, as the computer itself is so hopelessly oudated.

Hi guys. I have taken some precious time taking the picture in order for better assistance in upgrading this system. This is a uATX form factor.

I have some questions.
1. After viewing the first 5 pictures, is it possible to fit in a Sapphire Ati Radeon 9550SE AGP card which supports 4x and 8x? What is the actual dimension of the AGP card? Any risk of it being a high profile card as I supposed the motherboard supports low profile card?

2. The motherboard supports 4x. Is there any risk of wrong voltage being keyed? Reference from http://www.directron.com/15agpguide.html

3. From the third picture, will the ram lock blocks the agp graphic card after it is being installed?

4. From the power supply shown in the picture, is it a matx power supply? Can I simply buy the power supply of a microatx case meant for system builders?

5. How do you find the cable magement?

Thanks all.

Hi there. Could anyone assist?
Would it be possible to power the graphic card with the stock 200W matx power supply? What happens when the power requirements of the video card is not met?

Sigh after doing some extensive research, the voltage keyed is holding me back from buying the Sapphire 9550SE 8x and 4x AGP 128mb vga card.

This is how it went:
I just phoned a local retailer about the card I am buying and questioned them about the card's compatiblity with my motherboard. Apparently they have completely no idea about whether the vga card being an AGP2.0 or AGP3.0 compliant vga card.
I spoke to them that my motherboard is an AGP2.0 and whether does it supports the vga I am buying. They responded that if my motherboard supports 4x it is not compatible with the vga card they are selling as it supports 8x instead.
I somehow induced that sometimes retailers does not know their stuffs so hereby wanting your take on it.

Basically my motherboard is a AGP2.0 and supports max up to AGP 4x.
After doing some research on AGP compatibility for sticklers

found out that the AGP3.0 runs at 4x and 8x on 0.8V although they may fit into a AGP2.0 1.5V slot they may not run.
Now I really require help in verifying if the Sapphire 9550SE is a AGP2.0 or 3.0 vga card. The website did not show this information can anyone help?

Not sure if the next link relates to the above but the strange thing is that the following link that I am showing you does not shows 8X.

Besides that, there is one which came with a fan and one without am I right?

I supposed the retailer is selling the non fan version? It is priced at $27.

Many thanks in advance.

go for a ram upgrade, bigger power supply, a graphics card (even witha 128mb or a 256mb you would see a great improvment), and you could either buy a new processor or try overclocking it, there are some good P4 prosessors out there, try ebay, you may also nedd a bios update and remember to check that everything u but is compatible, try looking for your mobo on the asus website
