XP Pro problem

I installed a new copy of XP Pro into a new build for the kids. Everything goes fine formatting drive, copying files to drive and the reboot screen comes up. But when the computer reboots and goes through its process it says "Disk Error please insert disk then hit enter". When I put the XP cd back in and hit enter it pauses then the same thing appears. I know after all the installing it should start up with XP but is not. This is what I have going on:

Asus P4B board w/1.7ghz Pent. 4
Cd-DVD drive
32mb Nvidia video
Floppy
40GB HDD

Any ideas??? Thank You.
 
Did the installation finish?

IF not the disk is probably scratched...i would just clean it and try again

if not there is a problem with the hard drive (if it finished the install)
 
So I'm guessing by what you said the computer formats via DOS and then copy's the files. From there the computer restarts, like it should, but it doesn't direct to the XP installation? If I'm right by what I'm saying there, then there's either something wrong with the disk (scratches, dirty etc.) or there's a file error on the disk itself. Did you actually buy the XP Pro or did you download it from the internet? If you downloaded it then I'm 99.9% sure all OS systems you download from the internet are rubbish and all have errors on them. If you bought it and it's not working I'd telephone the place you bought it from and seek their advice. If they replace you with another disk and the problem exists, the problem isn't to do with the disk. It's probably your Hard Drive.
 
Yes, Kevin thats exactly whats going on. No I bought the CD. But if it copied the files right wouldn't the reast of the CD work. Also when XP restarts should I do anything else like take the CD out, change the boot order? Will a floppy drive effect the restart? Thank You.

I reinstalled everything again but this time I did a "quick NTSF format". Now I get a General Protection Fault screen.

hey, in your first try did u select FAT32 as partition? It can happen that if the hard disk has bad sectors then the FAT32 file system fails. If that is the case try for NTFS though if the hard disk really has bad sectors then you have no option but to replace it.
 
OK XP needs to copy files and then it will reboot (leave the disk in) and then the installtion will finish

When you actually format the computer you should really do a full format, I know depending on your HD it can take a long time, but it's best to prevent any errors. Once it's formatted it will copy files for the installation so after the DOS has finished the computer will reboot - at this time YOU MUST LEAVE THE XP DISK IN - then the Windows XP installation will begin.

A floppy drive will not effect the restart unless you have it on 1st boot device on the F2 setup.

What I suggest you do now is format the computer again, letting it copy the files, keeping the XP disk in when the computer reboots after copying the files . It should be fine then :)
 
Well the first 2 times doing it I did the full format and got the disk error. There is nothing wrong with the hd becuase I switched it to my computer and it works. I would imagine its the disk because this has never happened before. I am guessing the quick format does not work as good as the full so I am going to do this one more time. Thanks again
