XP desktop files unable to open

My motherboard smoked, so I took out the hard drive and install into other computer as D drive (not a boot up drive). It seems working fine for access all the files except the files in mydocument/myname/desktop/* are unable to open. I guess it has some kind of protection that locks the files. I want to know how can I retrieve the files under desktop folder? thanks

The reason why it's doing that as the hard-drive doesn't recognise the new motherboard. What I would do is restart the computer and go to F2 setup and make the hard-drive with the problem you're getting as first boot.

If that doesn't work shut the computer off, plug the computer out. Un-plug the hard-drive you don't want, just keep the hard-drive you want pluged in. Start the computer up. If that doesn't work then it's likely you'll never retrieve those documents back - to my knowledge anyway.

KevinKevin: Thank you for your reply. I have tried to use that drive as boot up drive but since they are not using the same motherboard chip set, it is impossible. I can access all the files except the files in mydocument/myname/desktop/*. How come it can't open while other files are fine.

What type of files are you trying to open?
