The other day i was disscussing vid cards with my brother. I told him i planned on getting the 8800gt 512 vid mem, and he said that i sohuld get the 256mb, reason being i have a 17" crt(i know, but hey, it was free) and that 512 wont help me. so what do u say? will hte 512 help me no matter what kind of fps i get with a 256?

The difference in framerates will be negligible.
What you want to think about instead is have you got the kind of money to upgrade for the sake or maybe 2 or 3 extra fps?

So then 512 will hardly even make a difference compared to the 256, because of the resolution im running it at(1024x7680, right?

Oh yeah most definitely, I assumed you were @ 1280 x 1024, but at your resolution the difference will be even smaller. Save your cash and get a TFT for gods sake lol.

No you don't understand - a CRT is a Cathode Ray Tube monitor - IE it's about 2 foot deep, and weighs half a tonne. A TFT (or LCD) monitor is much, much thinner and sexier.

Like said above the 256MB will be just as good at lower resolution but if you upgrade to a larger monitor later you will wish you got the 512mb.

If the resolution is smaller then 1280*1024 then I'd suggest the 256mb version... But are the costs that much different?

(ps I voted 512 because I was stupid enough to vote first and then read the question.... =| )

Lol, I prefer CRTs to TFTs my brother has a 17" TFT and mine's a 19" CRT. Whenever I play games on his PC it just feels so fake :P like... ugh it's hard to describe but the games just seem to have more depth on my CRT

Sounds silly but I doubt I'll ever get a TFT unless I'm in a situation where I'll need to move it around a lot.

I thought he was gaming on 1280 x 1024 wherein the 256 still bottlenecks the GPU in certain games. Read....

Ok then get the 512mb version and get a larger res CRT. Having a 8800gt and a 1024 x 768 monitor is so funny I'm going to laugh.. Ha. Ha. :D

i think anyone buying a new card should go with a 512Mb one, especialy if playing at higher res and is a gamer.

im sure it would take advantage of more than 256Mb of ram with some games like Crysis today.
