Need new Video card - Gamer

Hi, im not the good with computers at all, so i was hoping i could come here for suggestions

I need a new video card. My old one is a intel one intergrated with my motherboard. I was hoping i could buy a new video card and just slip it in. Will this work? Can i slip a new video card in and have it work? Or do i have to buy a new motherboard, and video card.

Some video cards ive been looking into is the 8800gts, but i heard a new one is coming out tuesday.

hey. yes, the 8800gts is a good card.

but first, we'll need to know what your motherboard is and if it has a PCI-Express x16 slot. we'll also need to know the rest of your system's parts to see if it won't bottleneck the video card's performance. and if you have a powerful enough power supply to run all the components.

to check what parts you currently have you can either.

1. go to the start menu, under run/search type "dxdiag", and your system's information will be displayed.

2. download a application called Everest that also displays information about your computer.

if this is your Desktop, then yes; it has PCI-E slot in which you could install a 8800GT. However, the CPU might be a bottle neck, but you'll definitely have a huge increase in gaming performance as opposed to before.

Oh okay, So I just put the card in?
I don't have to worry about the old card being intergrated with the motherboard?

Try putting in the card, plug your monitor to it, and see if it works. If not, come back here, we can instruct you on how to get it to work. For example, you may need to disable the integrated video card by the BIOS if it doesn't work. (This is because your computer still boots on the integrated video card instaid of the graphics card you put in).
 
These are the steps for installing a vid card correctly!

1. Un-install old graphics drivers or software
2. Open Device Manager (in control panel) then click "Display adapters" then right click your integrated and right click "Disable".
3. Shut down pc
4. Install graphics card
5. Boot up pc
6. Install new drivers and software
7. Restart

It's that easy. No need to disable you integrated in your bios as it will detect the PCI-E card automatically and change it over.
 
HP computers don't give you a big enough power supply for anything. I had a a1640n and it came with a 300W PSU.


So you might have to buy a new PSU to support a 8800GTS or a 8800GT.

Ive installed my card, and ive seena an imporvment of about 10-15fps . so at the moment im running at 56fps in cities and 80-100 in instanced areas. I have a problem though the game kind on stops for 1 second and then quickly catches up. could this be a power supply problem
 
^^ What kind of PSU do you have and how many watts does it have?

Also, did you hook up the 6 pin PCI-E power cable?
 
to check the psu wattage, you will most likely have to open-up your case again and take-out the powersupply. on one side, it should have a sticker on it giving you the name, brand, model, wattage, amperes, and all that good stuff. also, the 6-pin connector is a special psu power connector that supplies extra power to teh video card. the connector looks like this:
