Which laptop is good for a non-gamer?

Most product reviews seem to emphasize that laptop's suitability for gaming. However, what I want to do is basic word processing (writing, editing, etc.), e-mail and surfing the Internet, watching movies and listening to music. Possibly some photo editing, but no gaming at all. I'd also like it to be compact enough to use on my lap, when I'm curled up on the couch or in bed, and I'm concerned that a large screen would make it unwieldy.

I'd like the laptop and cooling pad to be light enough to rest comfortably in my lap, but I'm not too concerned with portability, since I'm mainly just looking for something to use when I'm curled up on the couch or in bed. Most of the time, I'll probably just plug it in, rather than running it off the battery.

I need a hard drive large enough to store a lot of lengthy manuscripts, as well as music videos. And I want good screen resolution and sound for movies and music, but I'll usually be listening with headphones.

What model of laptop would you suggest for my needs? and what model of cooling pad?

hey there.

first we'll need to know what your budget is. then from there we'll pick out a laptop that'll suit your needs.

would like a 12-13 inch laptop aswell?

Photo-editing laptops require some of the same things as gaming laptops. If you want to edit good size photos without lagging, a gaming laptop would do well. Try looking at HP laptops. The HP dv6700t notebook has intel processors and is an average sized notebook. Click here to look at it. I don't know about sterlings, but it is $600 usd.

Now that laptop has a kind of small 1280 resolution. Dell notebooks have the option of upgrading the display size if that is a big concern, but it may be hard to within the budget. I don't know if anything but dell's $1000+ xps notebooks have this option, but you can try it.

If you're looking for a regular laptop, most of the "non-gaming" laptops will fit your needs. You might want to shop around for a specific configuration or brand you might favor, but for general use and minor tasks like some photo editing a cheaper laptop will fit you just fine. Have a look around new egg or search google for some cheap deals.

Budget; Display size

I expect to pay somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000.

I've been assuming that a smaller screen (13 inches???) would be best if I want to actually use it in my lap, as a 15 inch screen would be too unwieldy...am I wrong about this? (Of course, a larger screen would be better for watching movies...)

For the same reason (lap comfort), I'm concerned about a computer that gets very hot.

Also, I would like a full-sized keyboard.

All recommendations & advice are much appreciated!!!

Not true at all a normal Pentium 4 or just an Intel Core Duo (not the 2 even) will do the job just fine as well as 1GB of ram and an Intel GMA X1300 or X3100 will work as Photo editing is 2d

Get a MacBook 13.3 or a MacBook Pro 15'' and plus a program called smc fan control allows you to spin up the fans faster thus getting not hot but in exchange is loud. Maybe go to ebay and buy a PowerBook G4 12'' for like 600-800$ and it will be practically new.

Is that a joke? A P4 laptop will not run vista AT ALL. Find one with vista and link it.

I found this p4 laptop

256 megs of ram, 20gig hard drive, and a floppy drive.

It would be better to have any c2d laptop than any p4 laptop. Find one that's better, and I'll believe you. Also, it would be better to have a dedicated card on any laptop unless you care about 10-20 minutes of battery life or a few extra degrees of heat.

Here's another.

40 gigs of ram, 768 megs of ram. Neither of these will run vista.

Pentium 4 will run vista. Did you think a pentium m 740 could run vista well guess what it does because i put ultimate on one before and that was a rubish vaio sony laptop so a pentium 4 laptop with a 1gb of ram and a dedicated GPU and a 50GB HDD will do fine
