How to store an External Hard Drive

I may be purchasing a portable hard drive to backup data/pics. I do not want to store it in my house where my machine is kept in the event of fire, ect. I plan to store the hard drive at work and bring it home weekly, make my backups then bring it back to work. What is the best method of transporting an external HD? In a case? When at work what type of environment do I need to keep it in (temp, ect). Is there anything that I need to keep it away from or anything? Thanks
 
Theres no need to worry with portable hard drives, they are very solid and are quite tolerable to damage. If you are still concerned however try just storing it in a anti static bag to prevent circuitry failure due to static shock, although this rarely happens.

Or buy an external hard drive cover.
 
Hard drives today can take quite a beating IF THEY AREN'T RUNNING. Now I have banged some around while they were spinning by accident and no damage was done, but I know parked, most can withstand a few hundred G's.

If you can manage the size, I'd recommend getting a 3.5" drive rather than a 2.5". They tend to be a bit more durable and last longer (but this isn't always the case...)

Yes, i have a 2.5" because i take it for school and it fits into my pocket so it is easy to transport. But i think the external hard drive is great.
