32bit vs. 64bit xp?

so i'm planning on gathering parts for a new computer within the week, and will also be needing to get a new OS disk since mine is out of installs :/

my question being though what advantages will i see if i were to get a 64bit version of xp rather than the 32bit version? the only thing i've read is that it will allow you to use more ram effectively, but other than that i'm not sure.


just to share, i'll be getting an evga 780i mobo, Q6600 quad, corsair dominator ddr2 1066, seagate barracuda 500gb, and i'll be using my 7900gto video card for a while. i'm assuming this is all compatible with a 64bit os, yes?

Get Vista Ultimate 64 bit...... - you have the good specs for it and the 64bit is a lot better.
 
Don't buy Windows XP at this point, I agree with Cohen. Either get Vista Ultimate or Home Premium 64 bit.
 
It depends on what you will be using the system for. An application needs to be wrote specifically for 64 bit in order to take advantage of the 64 bit platform. 64 bit programs are much more difficult to come by than 32 bit. For a home system I would go with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit because of the compatibility issues.

Nope. Go for the 64 bit because then everything is compatible! the 64bit is always the way to go!

While most of that is true, almost all 32 bit apps will work on a 64 bit OS.
 
hmm well i'll probably be going with 64 bit then. as far as software goes, i'll probably be using photoshop cs3, office 2007, itunes, aim, and probably a couple of other applications but nothing serious. 64bit won't conflict with games though will it? the only games i really play frequently are counterstrike 1.6 and dod source.

I've played those games on Vista x64 without any issues.

That's why you get the 64 bit.

Well all of those will work on the 64 bit version.

But will the 64 bit everything is at least compatible with it.
 
I've use XP 32/64 and Vista HP 32/64.
The XP 64 bit kind of sucks, MS has slowed the already dismal support for hardware and software compatibility with it. Not Recommended.
Vista 64 is ok. So long as you have the drivers for your hardware it's very nice. I had issues with my onboard sound, but after a fresh reinstall and some tinkering it worked well.
Go Vista Home Premium x64 or Ultimate.
 
I'm using 64bit XP Pro now and have not had a problem.... just have to have the OS up to date!
 
well as far as driver support goes i checked all the websites of the motherboard, video card, and sound card i have so i think i'll be okay in that department. i'm probably going to go with vista though, not xp.

All the parts will be supported with vista.
