i have been out of the loop for a while when it comes to computer hardware, just using my old HP laptop, working on my cars, and getting everything straight. well i got my new apartment and I am ready to build a new desktop with good performance, maybe gaming performance depending what i can buy within budget without spending a fortune. i dont know what is the latest and greatest as far as hardware goes, so i need someone to fill me in.

and some recommendations for a nicely performing system i can build for $600-$1000, not including software.

i WILL NOT use Windows Vista, BTW. friend of mine has it on his laptop, it sucks IMHO.
 
the best hardware would be 9800gx2 790i motherboard quad core but i think that would go wayyy over your budget so a 8800gts mabye 2 in sli 2-3gbs ram dual core mabye 780i motherboard
 
they make 4 core CPUs now??? holy damn i have been out of it for a minute.

i am not a hardcore gamer so really i dont need the latest and greatest litterally i just wanted to know what was out there and what is the best bang for buck these days.

so what i put after i think that would be wayyyy over bugjet would be good probably dont need the 780i motherboard though mabye 680i or something instead

Total cost: $995

That's one setup you can get these days for about $1000 USD. That will do anything you want it to, and it will be powerful enough to play most new games pretty comfortably. Other people will voice their opinion on better parts, but this is from my knowledge, so criticism is more than welcome, just no flaming.
