ok, so some backround [first off, hello all, this is my first post] :D

next, so yeah, i had limewire on my computer and recently contracted a virus from it. now, my computer only works in safe mode, like if i dont start it in safe mode, it wont even get to the login screen. so yeah... i need need need to get my music and pics off. i realize that when i want to put them back on my computer after using the sys recovery disc's [the ones that wipe it clean, and return it to original factory settings], that ill have to scan all the files one by one. but how would i do this. i already have an external HD. also, would there be any way to get my favs from IE7 off, and onto my externalHD then back on when all is well.

thank you.

specs of laptop:
hp dv6565
1.5ghz centrino duo processor.
200gb HD.
2gb of RAM.
windows vista home premium.
anything else you need, lemme know.

Do you want to try and dis-infect your pc or do you just want to start over and get advice from us?

To backup everything just plug in the external hdd and format it and drag everything to it. As for the IE, you can right click each of your bookmarks and click "copy" and then you can paste them into a folder or something. Then when you have the new XP up and running just open the link back up and then click "add to favorites".

Most likely the files that you have are not infected themselves. But, to scan them just get a free version of AVG or similar and install it. Then just right click the whole folder and hit "scan with ...).

what do you mean the new XP? im going to keep it vista. ive thought about XP, but i dunno. i just like vista. and would i be able to access IE from safe mode w/ no networking? and yeah, im going to sweep it clean. not try to salvage it... unless you ppls can figure it out?

^^ Srry didnt see that you had Vista! You still will be able to access IE in safe mode but, you wont be able to go to any pages. Can you use the internet at all? If not then we cant get you dis-infected.

i cannot, when i attempt to boot in safe mode with networking. it pulls the same sh!t [excuse my french] that it does if i just tried to norml boot it. it wont even get as far as the log in screen. so to answer your question, no, i cannot access the internet whatsoever. :\

although ill attempt later tonight, and if i make it on... ill post here. :D

Well never mind about it b/c the apps we use here on CF you need to be in normal boot when the virus's are active in order to see the virus's with the app. So i guess your kinda stuck with reformatting.

Even if your system won't boot into Normal mode or Safe Mode with networking, it should still be generally possible to recover from virus infections if you use a disk to transfer the required files from a working machine to the infected one. It may, however, involve more effort than restoring from factory settings, and we can't guarantee that removing the infection will restore your computer to normal status.

If you want to attempt to disinfect it, start by posting a HijackThis log. To do so, download HijackThis from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HiJackThis.exe and save it on the disk. Insert it into the infected machine, copy HijackThis.exe to the machine and run it.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

When the Notepad window opens save the file onto the disk and use the good computer copy and paste the log into a reply post.

If you would prefer to restore, however, and want to keep your Internet Explorer favorites, they are located in C:\Users\<User Name>\Favorites (replace user name with your actual user name) - just copy the whole folder onto the disk and back into the same location once you've restored.

Just get an external drive and install AVG anti-virus free edition onto your new computer and plug the external drive into the new computer in safe mode and scan everything. then you can safely copy all the files and then scan again
