Help old lady with MEMORY problems?!

Until I can get more memory installed, what can I do to help? Will this cause a crash? I don't require a lot from my puter, but lately I've been doing a lot of picture scanning & saving. Have gotten messages that Windows is increasing the size of virtual memory or something like that. Then today I've gotten error messages Out of Memory at line __ How serious is this?
Will it help if I delete some folders of pictures and store them on a flash drive?
Is the clickety-click sound that my computer makes (in the tower) upon startup related to this memory issue?? I REEEALLY don't wanna lose everything...please H E L P ?? Thanks so much, Bev

Dear lady, i believe you are Confusing MEMORY with HARD DRIVE space. They are not the same. All of your Photos and Folders that you Refered to are on your Hard Drive. If you're Running out of Memory, there are a Few things that you can do for Free and some things that you can do that Cost Money. I'll start with the Free

1 Look at your taskbar at the bottom of your Screen. Do you have more than 5-7 Icons? If you have 10 or more, there's a Problem. Those are called TSRs (Terminate and Stay Resident). Those are Programs that are still running in the background. If one of them is Norton (Symantec) or McAfee, it's understandable. Those Programs are Resource Hogs. Click your Start Button. Click "Run" and type MSCONFIG in the box. You should see your System configuration utility. Click the "Startup" Tab. This is a list of everything that you have scheduled to load on startup. Does your Computer seem sluggish when you first turn it on? That's why. There is NOTHING in this list that is essential for your computer to have when you first boot. What i usually do is Disable everything in the list. You can see a "Disable All" button. Once you've done that, you can go back and select the things that you DO want to run at startup. It's also important to remember that just because you've disabled it on startup, doesn't mean it isn't avialable to you when you do want to run it. You'll just have to actually click on the icon to start that program when you want to run it. this DOES NOT delete any programs from your computer.

2 Another Possibly is Malware/Spyware/Adware. These are Programs that do things like Record your serfing habits so that companies will know what you're interested in. This way, they can open the right popups. Keyloggers. These are Programs that will record your Keystrokes. This is a good way for someone to hijack your system. if you're entering a password, or credit card information, they can get that through a keylogger. There are also Rootkits, Those are VERY VERY dangerous as they modify the operating system it's Self. Something else that you can do is to not click links in your E-Mail. Even if you know the person that sent it to you. They may not know that there's anything malicious there. Forwarded E-Mail can be fun, but it's a good way to get your System Compromised. Don't read it, don't send it. these things should be removed (Obviously). There are many free programs that you can download to help you detect and remove these. I use Spybot: Search and Destry, Adaware, and Hijack this! Something that's important to remember about any spyware scanner of virus protection program is that BEFORE EACH SCAN you must UPDATE YOUR DEFINITION FILE. Some programs will do this for you automatically if you have an Internet connection. A Side note: if you're looking for Free anti-virus, AVG Free is OUTSTANDING.

3 another thing that you can do is to increase your Pagefile. This is part of your Hard Drive that your Computer uses like Memory. You can increase the size of space that is allocated (Set Aside) for Caching. I could explain Caching, but let's just say that it's not something that you NEED to know and i tend to be overly long winded. This is one of those times. Click start and select Control Panel. In there click the "System" Icon. Click the "Advanced" tab and look at the top where it says "performance". Click the Button that says "Settings". Now click the "Advanced" Tab. Right there where it says "Virtual Memory", Click Change. You'll see a place where you can change those values. This is the amount of space that your OS allocates for Paging. It's okay to make these values pretty high. Try 2048 and 4096. If this is the Problem, this brings me to the only Pay solution that i can think of right now.

4 Buy some more Memory (RAM). No, i'm not talking about your Hard Drive where you store your Data. Memory is like a Scratchpad for your CPU. it comes in DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Module). Basically a small Circuit board that attaches to some slots on your Motherboard. These days any less than 1GB is pretty Low. 2GB would be Swell. If you're a Gamer, 4GB or more might be required.

P.S. If it's your Hard Drive Clicking, You need to make sure you back up those Photos. Any Data that you think is important should ALWAYS be stored in TWO PLACES. when i say two places, i don't mean two places on the same computer, i mean in differant rooms, or even in differant buildings. Hard Drives don't last forever, and when they do fail (It's only a matter of time), they'll take all the data with them. If you've got irreplacable Photos of Family and Friends, i Highly Recommend this. Another option is to Upload all of your Photos to the internet on sites like Photobucket. If your house ever burned down (God Forbid), what would become of your Photos?

As I walked through your reply: my hard drive is barely used, even with all my pics, etc. I had called a radio show last night on www.55krc.com (computer show) & explained about the "windows increasing the size of your virtual memory" AND the window that said OUT OF MEMORY at line...
their response was "oh...." and it didn't sound good! They told me I needed more ram. I AM confused about processes, msconfigs, etc...
so I did disable almost everything on startup except that I don't know what SHOULD be running and what shouldn't.

When I first did the msconfig..."An access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to logon using an Admin account to make the specified changes"....WHAAAAT??? Aren't I the admin??
I'm the only one to use this computer. It prompted a restart, which I did. The sound windows makes on startup sounded scratchy, is that just my speakers?

SPYWARE: Where can I get the spyware/s that you spoke of? Do you run ALL of these different ones, and if so, why? I DO have CA security, which has a spyware scan. Did that, found 18 items which I got rid of.

Your #3: I finally found Performance Options and under Memory Usage there were 2 options...Programs was checked, not system cache.

When I got it put back together, it sounded like a car with a dead battery TRYING to boot up. Needless to say, I fried the motherboard attempting to get it to start. So maybe this time I'll let a prof'l do it, huh?! How do I know what memory stick to buy? And how do I know how much my computer will "allow" me to add?

I have been uploading my photos to snapfish.com because it seems more user friendly for the family I'm going to invite to view it (and me too). I have also been putting them on a flash drive every now and then. This whole backup thing is a whole 'nuther thread that confuses me!

If I make copies on a CD, what kind do I get where I can save word docs and photos, yet be able to go back and get them again? I'm still wondering why having photos, scanning, etc would use up so much ram?? One of these days, with help maybe I'll get it!

These days any less than 1GB is pretty Low. 2GB would be Swell. If you're a Gamer, 4GB or more might be required.

That's only if you're using Vista. A system with 2k or XP will run stuff like Farcry or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on 1 GB just fine. 4GB is only necessary if you're doing some hardcore CAD rendering or digital video editing/compression.

You can see exactly how much RAM you have by going to your Control Panel and Clicking "System". Right there under the "General" tab, you should see your CPU and RAM Listed. You should post those here for futher Diagnostics. It would also help if we knew what we were dealing with, so if you could post your Brand and Model of computer, that would help as well. It's possible that you may not be able to upgrade your RAM much further. Computers have a Useful life of around 3 years if you're not a Power User. Sometimes you can get away with 5 years, but i don't recommend it. What's your Operating System? (I should have asked this First)

If it was refering to Services, i think you were on the wrong tab. There IS a services tab, but that could make your computer unbootable if you disable all of those. make sure you're only dealing with the STARTUP tab. It is possible that the Scratchy sound is your speakers. a good way to test that is to try another set of speakers. There's no way of me telling what the sound your computer is making would mean without me being there. The only sound i could diagnose from here reliably would be your post Beep Codes. If your machine is healthy and there are no conflicts during post, you should hear one distinct Beep.

No, you can't have CA and AVG at the same time. Virus Scanners don't play nice with each other. You have to choose one or the other, but whichever one you DO choose, make sure you keep it Updated with new definition files.

Spyware/Adware programs are a differant story. You can have more than one of those, and you SHOULD have more than one. Since there are so many of those types of programs coming out, no one scanner will catch everything. Some scanners will catch things that others won't.

AOL is a Resource Hog. You remember your Experiance with Norton? Try removing AOL. The best approach to security is CAUTION. you don't open anything in your E-Mail that you weren't expecting. Don't follow any links in your E-Mail to update your personal information. Remember to have your Virus Scan active and scan with Spyware/Adware Scanners Regularly. REMEMBER TO UPDATE BEFORE YOU SCAN. Another thing you can do is try a differant Web Browser. When People make Malicious Code, they Target the Default Windows Browser. There are a number of really good Browsers out there that you might actually like BETTER than Internet Explorer. Flock Just came out and is Kinda neat. There's Opera, Seamonkey and Firefox too (Firefox is Tried and True). all of those can be found at www.Download.com

your page file works off of your Hard Drive space, so it's okay to change that. you should first check to see how much space you have left. a full hard drive is not a happy hard drive. you can see this by clicking "My Computer" or just "Computer" in Vista. Select the drive, Right Click it, and choose Properties. This should give you a Pie Chart of where you are with this drives space. another thing to consider is Fragmentation. You probably need to Defragment your Hard Drive. you can find the windows default program under Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. Run this to make your Hard Drive Breathe Easier.

nowadays, Installing Memory is Pretty Simple if you are careful. The old EDO Ram used to be kinda Tricky to install, but SDRAM and DDR is pretty User friendly. The first thing to remember is to Shut down the machine and UNPLUG IT. Never try to change RAM with the machine on or having any kind of power going to it. make sure you ground yourself to the Chasis of the machine. They make Wrist Straps, or you can just Touch it. If you've got SDRAM or DDR (I Hope you do). then all you have to do is open the case and look for the Memory slots. You've done this once before, so i guess you know what they look like. These slots have white tabs on either end. make sure they're at approximately 45 Degrees and the slot in question is empty. you'll notice that there's a small Key in the Slot and that the Memory It's self is also Keyed on the bottom. Make sure those line up. NEVER FORCE IT. Gently Slide the DIMM into the edges of the white tabs and gently Push straight down. as the memory seats, the White tabs should come to 90 Degrees and lock into place.

The only way to tell exactly what Kind of RAM your machine takes and how much of it, is by looking on the Manufacturers Website. That's a Good Reason to post your System Brand and Model Number.

you should consider an External Hard Drive. you can get those for a Modest amount of money. I like to shop at www.newegg.com .

The External Hard Drive Solution would be Easier. With CDs, you will accumulate quite a collection in no time. A Hard Drive will hold alot more. That way you'll be able to keep them all in one place. Some Photo Applications are VERY CPU and RAM intensive. My Stepmother (She's about 60), Has the Same problems. I do the best i can to keep her upgraded, but she doesn't like to make major changes to her computer. She uses alot of Photoshop, and i have to keep her computer upgraded enough for that. hard to do though since she lives in Missouri and i live in Mississippi. If you're really into Photos, you should get yourself a Digital Photo Frame and an Eye-Fi Memory card for your Camera. My Stepmom loves hers.

If your computer is making a clicking sound like a popcorn popper, then you should backup all of your important things quickly on to something else like a flash drive. Normally this sound means the hard drive is almost done for.

Knowing that you are running low on memory and also need a hard drive, I would recommend that you find a new system as this will be cheaper than having a repair technician upgrade your memory and reload your system on to a new hard drive.

It sounds like you are to the point of diminishing returns with your old pc.. Now is a good time to get a new one if you can afford it.

Thanks for replying, unfortunately, I'm unemployed right now and have tons of expenses. SO if I can have a friend help me upgrade my ram & hard drive, would it still be cheaper to get a new system? I'm very happy with XP, and I'm afraid Vista won't be compatible with programs that I have?

This makes me so mad because this computer is on 2+ yrs old! This is my 2nd Compaq & the same thing happened to the old one (where I got the memory message).
THAT CLICKING stops after it is running...ONLY happens at startup. I leave it on 99.9% of the time...is that bad to do?

My 2nd is Drive D: 6.95 GB, Used 5.77

I don't actually DO much with the photos. I never print them off, but I do edit them. Don't know HOW I got 3 different photo programs, but I prefer to use PAINT. NOW for some reason, (started a while ago) if I just dbl click it opens my photos with MS Photo Editor. I have to right click, open with, then Paint. I also have Windows Pic & Fax Viewer. Can I delete the 2 I don't use?
Any reason that you know of to keep either?
BTW my pictures are opening up a LOT faster since I did that disabling thing.

Just as a relationship to my parent's xp desktop, their's has only half the mb's of ram as yours. Ours does get some virtual memory problems sometimes. Also, HP owns compaq. Compaq is a budget, low spec brand, but they are not at all "Crap". If you do decide to get new computer, I would recommend that, because it would be easier, and more "safe" to start with a new computer. To upgrade the ram on an old computer, will not make it last forever, and it would be better to upgrade before it gets much older in my opinion. I just upgraded my laptop ram for the first time, and I was nervous. I almost broke the pins that hold the ram, but that was because I didn't read my manual. It is easy to upgrade desktop ram, all you have to do is touch the side of the computer before you put it in.

This might actually be your Problem. Here's a Quote from Wikipedia:

"Windows XP SP2 and later by default on processors with the no-execute (NX) or execute-disable (XD) feature runs in PAE mode in order to allow NX. The NX (or XD) bit resides in bit 63 of the page table entry, and without PAE, page table entries only have 32 bits; therefore PAE mode is required if the NX feature is to be exploited. However, desktop versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista) limit physical address space to 4 GB for driver compatibility reasons."

The last part where it says driver compatibility reasons, might be the problem you're having. It's a bit out of my league to actually SAY that it's the problem because i've never Seen this before. (That doesn't mean it's bad, Relax) Perhaps someone else will have some Input on the matter Obviously, you don't need Physical Address Extension because you only have 512MB of RAM. If i can get some time, i'll research how to disable it and if it would be SAFE to do so.

Do you have to enter a password when you first start windows? Usually the first account created after a clean Windows Install is the administrator account. this is the account that has permission to do EVERYTHING. This is the account they want. If it's not the one you're currently using, it might be called simply "Administrator". You can view the accounts currently on that windows install in your Control Panel under USER ACCOUNTS. ctfmon is nothing more than a Microsoft Office Language bar file. Not important at all. You are gonna want to make sure that almost all of those are UNCHECKED. The CA Security should remain Checked. Again, Unchecking them doesn't disable them. It simply prevents them from starting when you startup the computer.

**What is a beep code?

A Beep code is a way that your motherboard talks to you during POST (Power On Self Test) All that gibberish that is displayed when you're booting up is a test to see what's attached and how everything is configured. When there's a problem, the Motherboard communicates that to you with a series of beeps. based on that series of beeps, you know where to look for the problem. a good way to test that would be to disconnect your keyboard and reboot. your motherboard would beep at you telling you that your keyboard is disconnected. The Computer should always make one single beep on a good startup. Those beep codes are easy to find on the web for diagnostic purposes. they're important because the computer does diagnostics before it is even able to display anything on the screen, or you might have a video problem. The only way for it to let you know what's wrong is with beeps.

**Is CA good ?

I have never used CA, so i don't know. Just make sure you keep that Definition file up to day and do regular scans. you'll be fine. I can tell you that AVG is good and i currently use Kapersky.

When you were first learning how to drive, did you quit because it was too hard? So you made a mistake the first time. Try again. If you fry your Memory, send it back to the manufacturer and try again. It really is a Simple Procedure. YOU CAN DO IT!! *Uses Rob Schnieder Voice*

Just as Sir Travis D said, HP and Compaq are one and the same. The Number that i need is the one that comes right after the word Presario. EG: Compaq Presario 3500.

Well, i was gonna look this up for you and give you some External HD Suggestions, but it looks like this internet connection just isn't agreeing with me right now. I'm in Kuwait, and the internet that we get here is actually WORSE than dial up. It's supposed to be high speed but everyone does Video Chat with their Friends and family back home and suck all the bandwidth down. They need to Put a bandwidth limiter on everyone so that won't happen. Sorry, it's a Sore Subject for me.

You don't need to delete windows Pic and Fax Viewer or Ms Photo Editor, those are windows applications. What you CAN do is tell your computer that you want it to open certain types of file in certain applications BY DEFAULT. This is how you do that:
Find the file that you want to open. Right Click on it and select move your Cursor to OPEN WITH. you should see another menu. at the bottom of that menu it will say CHOOSE PROGRAM. Select that. You'll get a list of programs and just under that list, there's a check box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of File". All you have to do is select your favorite program and check that little box.
