So I have an old pentium MMX 166MHz Gateway 2000 SOLO which I'm going to upgrade to XP - It is possible if it can be done on a 75MHz CPU

The specs are:
Pentium MMX 166MHz
128MB Ram
2/3DG Magix Graphics
CD - Rom Drive
2GB HDD.

Ok I'm upgrading CD and HDD as they seem to be removed very easy and there like almost a smart bay. Problem is I dont know what connector they use may it be SCSI Or IDE or PATA (I hardly doubt Sata was invented in 1998's.

Don't waste your time or money. It won't run worth a crap especially on a 166mhz cpu. I wouldn't put xp on anything less than a 500 mhz cpu and 512 ram. And chances are you can't get enough memory for it to run properly either. That system is old.

Duh the system is old but I want to make something out of it.
 
your not gonna get much out of it with those specs. Its just to old. I wouldn't waste my time if I were you.
 
We are answering your question... XP is not the operating system to be putting on a machine like that. 95 or 98 would be your best bet if you are wanting a windows platform.

Required Processor Class Intel Pentium
Required Processor Speed 233 MHz
Required Memory 64 MB
Required Disk Space 1.5 GB

and those specs will be like a snail returning home after a night on the booze

The question was what type of connectors was the HD and CD

The connectors was a statement not a question.

It will most probably be a Pata (IDE) connector, im not sure how to find what you are looking for, i have had a quick look on Ebay and Google, but cant find anything decent within 5mins...

It would be useful if you could take some better quality pictures of the actual ports, it would make it easier to compare to other images.

Also, for everyone else, they werent asking if the CPU was good enough! they were saying that if Windows XP can be installed on a system with a 75Mhz CPU then it can be for a 133MHz CPU, they have decided that is fine. they just want to know the type of port the HDD and CD drives have on them, is it really that hard to understand?

Hey man I know this is completely side tracking- but what about installing a distro of linux on it?
Some distros are pretty resource efficient- so the computer would be more usable.

Just an idea.

What video editing software does it come with (I know WMM is useless but I have to have some sort on it)
 
Erm it probably depends on which distribution of linux you get- I'll be honest I know very little about linux but it perhaps seems a better idea than XP.
I would wait for the opinions of some of the others- I'll do a quick google in the mean while to see if i can pick anything up.
 
probably PATA, and you can install xp on it. but it'll be the worst. my cousins 1.1ghz 256mb ram celly computer can barely keep up, and it lags and such quite often. Xubuntu is a good opensource low-spec operating system.
 
u could i have done it on a 200mhz but i had to do a lot of tweaking just to get the start menu to take less than 10 minutes to open
