i tried running scandisk from there and it starts and checks out the drive and fixes some errors
Oh dear, scandisk :(
Scandisk was quite good, Norton also had one called Norton Disk Doctor, but these old programs went out when NTFS came in
The problem is Scandisk will revert all your files/folders to File000000.chk, and just to make sure that it kills your system it'll make about 100,000 of them or so.

I'd say you have now fully corrupted the drive (and likely any restore partition)

Yes ;) Best to order a "HP Recovery disc"
Please note: In future only use CheckDisk (command line is: chkdsk /r)
As for recovery, I think I tried to recover (or unscramble rather) those CHK files, but it was a lost cause

By the way, you probably should have just followed what I said.

i ran scandisk a long time ago too, so i guess the drive was screwed up before you even tried to help me, thanks anyway

So did you get a copy of XP or are you still wasting time with those retarded recovery discs??
wildbill, we have gone over this already (on another thread)
Recovery discs are quite safe, and are actually preferred by all manufacturers
Actually I like them too, as they usually come with all the drivers, including the Hard Drive controller driver that allows the OS to be installed !

Your post is not helpful

Unless the Recovery partition is also corrupted
The problem with Recovery Partitions is when the drive fails or becomes fully corrupted
Best to use this time to purchase a Recovery disc from HP (I would if I were you)
