how much do schools pay for netbooks for pupils?

The reason I ask is because my daughter has lost her laptop. It was stolen from the classroom. They are asking us to pay over £300 for it. Would they really have paid that much for it? It was Samsung.
What should I do?
TIA

Ask them to show you the bill of that laptop before you pay for anything.
Your daughter must know what the laptop model was so you can be 100% sure that they will show you the correct bill and not some other just to take more money.

Yes, ask for the original invoice. Also ask why it isn't reported ot the polcie and why their insurance doesn't cover it. Rude if you ask me.

If its stolen from the classroom its their issue. Push back, go admin on their ass.

Refuse to pay regardless of the value. The laptop is school property and was stolen on school property, so not yours or your daughters responsibility. She did not steal it so they cannot exactly try to press charges, the school has no legal grounds to make you pay.

Unless it was brand new too, 300 quid is a little optimistic from them

Thanks guys. I was feeling a bit scared and my daughter was really worried too but you've put my mind at rest.
Also my colleague says that I should put it in writing to them saying its their responsibility as it went missing from the school and theres no way it would have cost that much etc etc. Any more ideas would be appreciated.

Did you ever sign any kind of contract that you were liable for it being lost, stolen, or damaged?

^ This is what matters. It doesn't matter what the school paid for them as they get a discount for a group buy so the replacement price is for individual item.

Good question.
If you did have a contract for this which you have signed then you must respect what is written in the contract.
But rarely schools make contracts for these things.

So if there was no contract and laptop WAS stolen in the school and NOT by your daughter then it is their fault.
In that case do what me,Okeydokey and Aastii said.
Don't pay them anything because it was their fault.

And 300 dollars for a netbook.Come on...
Can it play games like Crysis on BEST graphic quality level?
I don't think so...
So I am sure it was not 300 dollars lol.
Plus schools mostly get discounts on these things.

I'll see if i can shed some light as I work in 2 schools as an IT Technician but need to just point out all schools are different and run how that school principal/IT Tech wants to (Also different countries/states etc).

Somethings to ask -
Was this netbook a:
A) school owned netbook
B) Netbook you purchased

Did the school buy it and your daughter was allowed to use it and allowed to take it home but you didn't pay a cent towards it (classroom assigned)
Was she the only one using it or where other students using it also.

Did the school purchase it and you where given it but where paying it off?

Did you sign any kind of contract/form/email anything in writing about the netbook.

Don't quote me but if it was school owned and left in a locked room at night I wouldn't pay a cent as it was on school grounds therefore it is the schools responsibility to replace it.
If your daughter was to take it home and she left it there that can be a bit dicey on who is at fault.

Main thing is did you have any kind of contract with school in regards to it.

If they ask you to pay, you have every right to envoke their insurance and at the very most, pay the excess. If they disagree, ask them to show where you signed to be liable on school grounds and why their security failed?

If that all fails, get an invoice, claim it on tax.
