Yes, ask for the original invoice. Also ask why it isn't reported ot the polcie and why their insurance doesn't cover it. Rude if you ask me.
If its stolen from the classroom its their issue. Push back, go admin on their ass.
Refuse to pay regardless of the value. The laptop is school property and was stolen on school property, so not yours or your daughters responsibility. She did not steal it so they cannot exactly try to press charges, the school has no legal grounds to make you pay.
Unless it was brand new too, 300 quid is a little optimistic from them
