Need cheapest PC build to run Crysis 3 on max 30fps

I just wanted to agree with CLinician. Windows 8 is a new standard. It is optimized for gaming, the tiles make your gaming-PC look a lot cleaner.

Obviously there is still a desktop area, and the control panel is easier to access. You just have to go put the cursor at the bottom right of the screen.

if you are talking about maxing crisis 3 out with very high settings as well as msaa x8 then you wont be playing it at a constant 30fps all the time. I had a gtx 670 4gig ftw+ and it wouldn't get 30fps all the time (but most the time) and thats a better card then the 270x. I decided to get a 2nd one and I hit 50-60fps all day now with msaa x8 all day. you should shoot for a 280x minimum, or maybe 2 x r9 270's (non 'x for the sake of price.) that will get you 40-50fps with all msaa x8 maxed settings, and the 280x will get you what a 670 4gig ftw will. keeping in mind though that when using msaa maxed out it crisis 3 will eat up 2gigs of vram right away. id go with the 280x personaly if youe tight on money and want crisis 3 speced out. if your not too worried about "aa", then you can go with a much lesser card

I was considering the 280x or 7970...it was PCunicorn who said the 270x.

The 7970 would be perfect for your needs and I would get it over the 280x simply because it's cheaper and when overclocked performs the same.

Depends. I'd only bother with the 7970 now if I got a very good deal on one. At stock, the 280X is faster and don't forget you can probably overclock the 280X too. The 7970 is nearly 2 years old now, and the 280X is about 2 months old. Maybe less.

I recommend the newer cards, so unless you get a killer deal on a 7970, I would say go for the 280X.

The 280x is a 7970ghz edition with a different nametag so their technology is not any different. If he could get a 7970 and overclock it, he would literally get a 280x. You can even crossfire a 280x with a 7970.

I like to think about computers like this.

Say you were building a person, each component of the person is important and needs to be balanced correctly.

You could get an AMAZING BRAIN, but if his bones are weak it's gonna make his life a lot harder right? Say you gave him muscles that could make him a professional athlete but he has a weak heart and it gives out, you need balance.

It's very important to balance your build because if any part goes bad it could take the whole build with it and then you're out a whole lot of money.

Hope that helps you understand a bit better.

Ahh yes, the PC -> human body metaphor.
My friends always look at me like I'm insane when I compare PC parts to the body, good to see I'm not insane. At least not the only one :)

Yes, but he could get a 280X and overclock that. Then it'd be faster than a 7970 and a 7970 GHz Edition.

I'm not saying 'don't get the 7970' - I'm saying 'only buy one if you can get a good deal, since the 280X is newer.'

You should always aim to buy the latest parts. The 7970 is already nearly 2 years old.

In that sense the 280x is 2 years old too because it is a rebrand of the 7970 ghz edition, which is 2 year old technology. I totally agree with you with the get the newest thing out strategy, but it simply doesn't apply in this case.

It's not a 100% rebrand. They've tweaked them a bit, but the chip essentially is the same. I'm fairly sure you can squeeze more performance out of a 280X, even if you overclocked them both to the same MHz.

Okay then, sorry for talking you down Spirit.

Yeah it's not entirely a re-brand, so really get the 280X unless the 7970 can be had for quite a bit less.

It looks to me like the 7970s and 280Xs are around the same cost anyway, so get the 280X.

Here is a 7970 (non GHZ edition) for $340 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102961

Here's another with an aftermarket cooler for $310 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150665

The cheapest 7970 GHz Edition is $350 and most are $350-400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

Now for the 280X:

Here's a Sapphire 280X for $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202046

Here's an ASUS one for $310 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121803

It looks like most of the 280Xs are priced between $300 and $320 or so.

So, if you're buying new, then the 280X turns out to be cheaper than a regular 7970 and also cheaper than a 7970 GHz Edition by around $40-50. The 280X is faster at stock too and newer remember.

It should be a no-brainer.

A 4300 would seriously bottleneck a 7970. Go for a 8320 and R9 280 when it comes out. Or a used 7970, not hard to find for $250.

What do you mean by "bottlenecking"?

All I want is a minimum of 30fps....and the benchmarks seem like it would make it happen.

It means that the card is capable of getting 50fps but it needs to be paired with a strong enough cpu. With the 4300 you would get aroud 40 because the cpu wouldn't be able to keep up to the gpu. Why would you get a card cabable of getting 50 fps and cap it at 40 by not getting a strong enough cpu? At least get the 6300.

But the benchmark says it can reach 48fps....

It's a little unbalanced having an FX-4300 (which is a 100 buck CPU) paired with a 7970 or a 280X, which are 300 buck video cards.

The FX-6300 has two extra cores and is only 10 bucks more than the 4300, so I would at least get one of those. The FX-8320 isn't really all that much more expensive either.
