I bought a DWQ120AB2 oem sony drive from newegg a couple weeks ago, I found out it wasn't reading much of anything, so I returned it for a replacement, I just got the replacement today and found out that it's doing the same thing. Now is it the drive or my computer?

I was going to upgrade the firmware but didn't because it was telling me to create an account with half size alphanumerals or something like that, along with disconnecting everything. I didn't know half the stuff that was mentioned on there.

a while back I read something about using a software called something 'root'(maybe mistaking)? to uninstall all the garbage that companies install into firmwares to stop piracy(or something like that). Does anyone know what that software or one like that is called?

by the way: I'm running windows xp pro with sp2.

it gives me this message when a cd/dvd is in the drive:

F:/ is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Help me please.

First, the Sony rootkit was software added from Sony media such as cds on to the hdd to stop piracy. Nothing to do with your drive not working (unless you have pirated Sony music!).

Your drive should play a commercial music cd without any difficulty. Firmware will make no difference in that situation.

Go to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager, CD/DVD Drives. Check the Propeties of the drive for anything unusual. Then go to IDE controllers, find the channel the drive is connected to, Properties / Advanced settings. Transfer mode should be "DMA if available". Current Transfer Mode" should be "Ultra DMA Mode 2 or 4". If not ,you have a BIOS, cable or drive jumper problem. Post back info.

checked both cd/dvd and ide controller in the device manager menu, seems to check out, I have the dvdrw on cable select at the moment on slave and a dvd/cdrw combo on master. I didn't check the cables yet, but the dvd/cdrw which shares the cable is operating fine, I even tested the sony drive on master and still the same problem occurs. I have no idea what to change the bios to though. if you can help me with that, it'll be great.

I am planning to test the drive on windows 98 and me soon, I might try it on another computer aswell. thanks and later.

Cable select will not work unless you have a special cable. Put the drives on master and slave and see if that makes a difference.

I have the identical situation. Tried all the identical steps. I still can't figure it out.

Using Windows XP Pro and have a MSI motherboard with a 3.2 ghz processor. ATI All in one Rage 128 Pro Video card. My two Sony DVD drives are on Master (Writer) and Slave (Reader) with the master being the last on the cable. The Transfer mode is set to "DMA if available". Current Transfer Mode" is set to "Ultra DMA Mode 2"

Any other suggestions?
