The samsung spinpoint S hard drives are even faster than the raptors in everything but seek time. And they're only 7200rpms.
And remember (i mentioned this in another thread) a hard drive works like a cd-rom, remember that less and less data can be stored in the inner area of the disk, compared to the outer, so data stored at the outside edge of the disk can be read FASTER than data on the inside of the disk (you following me?)
And since the data on the Raptor is less densely packed on the disk, the drive begins to slow down with less data stored on it than with a conventional drive....
So real world performance, you may honestly have an edge with a standard 7200rpm drive if you're going to have quite a bit of data stored on the drive. And even moreso if you go with an especially fast 7200 like the aforementioned samsung S (and no i don't use a samsung, i use a cheap-o seagate, and i'm completely satisfied with it
)
